This New Year I resolve...

To cut back to 10 cups of tea per day.

Help out more with chores around the house.(I live alone).

I always look forward to the New Year for a new start on my old habits...

A doctor once said to his friend...

It's important to have a good vocabulary. If I had known the difference between the words 'antidote' and 'anecdote,' one of my good friends would still be living.

Many years ago I made a resolution to quit making resolutions...

It was the only resolution I ever kept!

I'm making the same resolution I have made for the past 4 years:

Never argue with an Idiot.
They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!

(Ever wondered why I post less and less here these days....?? )

Re: What's your New Years RESOLUTION? - 12/30/08 07:29 PM

To buy a top end arranger and start making some modern styles for your children and (grandkids for some of you)... My resolution is to do what I can to try and wipe out this "old fart" stereotype arrangers suffer from.... Or at least help a little to change some minds. Only downside is my resolution will require several grand. Convincing the younger crowd about arrangers is going to be hard enough.., convincing the wife on buying a top arranger could mean the end of my life or an extended visit with our living room sofa

Squeak that will never happen....millions "love to dance", to foxtrot, rumba, chacha, merengue, waltz, polka, tango, swing, will never die out & will never change in years to come....
it's not going anywhere.........not saying there isn't a place for the newer styles you enjoy...but they are mostly DJ driven & loop orientated, created by Workstations, samples, synths, & drum machines.....basically theres no reason to use an arranger for these it's just the way it is.

Re: What's your New Years RESOLUTION? - 12/30/08 07:38 PM

You've never played the DJX then... Arranger's (if the styles are written properly) can do a pretty good job at it. Problem is no one is writing the styles. Yamaha killed the line just when the sales of the original old blue were sky high. It made an impact..., possibly too good of an impact because they're top dog at the time was the EX5 (and the Motif Classic was in the works)..., can't have an inexpensive arranger keyboard designed solely for electronica taking a few bucks from the top line.

I just had an awesome 3 days in Ocean City MD. I got an off road permit for my Jeep Liberty and spent some time driving down the beach on Assateague Island. It was great. For NY resolutions:

1. Take better care of myself. Hy health is not as good as it used to be.

2. Take more time off to enjoy off roading, sailing a boat, riding a bike, ect.

3. Spend more time with the family.

4. Keep making people happy by playing music.

Happy New Year to everyone here,

Joe

I'm putting the next to the last nail in the "Dave & Donna" coffin. (saving the very last one till she's at the altar, or in a box)
We were on again - off a again, for the last 2 years, and now, since the summer ... she's (gulp) in "like" with another guy. Looks like I lost her ... again.
So, no more tears ... no more false hope ...
Only good thoughts for her and the "luckiest guy in the world"

Now, we ALL know what really happens to NYE resolutions, don't we?

I'll "try" to keep this resolution, and wish her well, but I miss her so much, and feel so stupid for ever letting her slip away from me. (twice) Sigh ... It's Charlie Brown and the little red haired girl all over again.

Happy New Year, folks.

* Stop playing on Sundays and Mondays.

* Limit live playing to 2 gigs during the week and 2 each Friday and Saturday, or 300 per year. Work more with my "family" trio.

* Finish a textbook I'm contracted to do.

* Actually spend some time learning more about some of the equipment I got in 2008 (GW-7, SH-201, SD-5, Nords, Hammond system, etc.).

* Visit several Synthzone members (Tony, Chas, Stephen, UD and others).

* Get rid of lots of stuff I don't need.

* Get more involved in a local music education program I started last year.

* Teach a communications techniques course both semesters.

* Read a lot more than I have been lately.

* Get ready to transition ownership/management of my company to my son in a year or so.

* Build a Berrian dune buggy.

* Build a "monster" kit motorcycle.

* Accept a director post with a local charity.

*Continue to be primary caregiver for Dr. Gragg, my dear father-in-law, and help Janice Gentry, wife of my musical friend who died last year with her home repairs, taxes, etc.

* Spend much more quality time with friends and family.

Help Captain Russ keep the above resolution. All kidding put aside Russ, it would be great having you stop by Rhody for a visit. BTW,if you've ever seen the Showtime series "Brotherhood" there are some real great shots of Rhode Island in the series. Of course Tony and I are nothing like the characters in the series.

Continue what I started this past September, i.e. getting back to a regular exercise program and keeping the off the 40 pounds I shed before the holidays.

And of course continuing to work at the keyboard and get more disciplined getting out those promotional packages.

Russ only sleeps (2) hours per night - he told me so

Not so much a resolution, more a new year wish - for just 1% of Russ' energy.

Shoot.., the heck with 1% of Russ's energy... I'd trade that with a small percentage of his collection any day!

Re: What's your New Years RESOLUTION? - 01/03/09 01:11 PM

Damn, Chas, looks like you and I are MORE ALIKE than I thought (LOL).

I'm big-time into time management. I don't watch sports, don't do any home maintenance, cut grass or anything like that. I do the things I really like, and get paid to do them. Then, I pay someone else to do the things I'd just screw up anyway. Meeting deadlines is an essential part of my business and lifestyle.

Even when I learn a tune, I go over it once or twice and then perfect it on the job. If I get into trouble, I do a medley, using that rythem pattern. I adjust my playlist by adding a new selection to my top 100 every day, and eliminating an exiasting one.

The thing to me is to set a schedule and meet it. he resulting sense of accomplishment is awesome.

I plan to slow down a little, but don't see reducing my playing, writing or teaching anytime soon. I have been eligible to draw a retirement from a former employer for almost 10 years (at a 5% penalty per year for starting before age 65), and never considered it. My day starts at 6:00 AM at a local University and ends at 1:00 PM after the last job. Thing is, I could never choose between music, film production, communications research and teaching and copywriting/photography. Probably never got as good at anything as I could have if I just made some choices. But, I enjoy my schedule now and will continue as long as I'm enjoying things.

That's the way I like it!

Russ
