Double-keyboard stand

I have an Apex, a double-X and aa atable-style with second tier. I really don't care for any of them because the upper keyboard overhangs too much over the lower so you have to separate them too much to see controls and such. The QuikLock Z72 http://www.zzounds.com/item--QLKZ72 looks like it might permit more of a stacking setup than the others.

Whic keyboard stand would you suggest to help the two boards be as close to each other as possible - more organ-like ?

I have 2 Quiklok M92s so easy to set up in 3 seconds, a little heavy, but easy to transport, I had the "Z" stand too, not easy to transport, it takes a lot of room since can't be flatten like the M92 and for about the same money.

As a former organist, I use 2 arranger keyboards in my gigs, and also got the "V" stand with the second tear, looks beautiful in stage, but it takes a lot more time to set up and is heavier than the M92 to transport it too.

Ditto to the M92 or the Z72. Either one will allow the bottom keyboard to be pulled out enough to use the controls without having to hunch over with a flashlight to see the panel. Like mdorantes said, the M92 flattens out for transport easier than the Z72. They are both a little heavier to transport than an 'X' type stand but way worth it in my opinion.

I tried one of those 'V' stands and didn't care for it at all. Besides having some wobble that was a concern, the way the arms are positioned (which like the Apex stand I had a while ago), if anyone happens to come up in front of you and lean on the left or right front corner of your keyboard, there is a good chance that the instrument will flip right off the stand.

Then there is the issue of foot room. The M92 and Z72 have nothing at all to get in the way of your feet. In fact, I sometimes use a set of bass pedals under my M92 when doing solo piano or duo gigs. The 'V' stand legs are in an awkward place for me at least when playing in a sitting position.

I just purchased the latest model of the QL-642 which is fully adjustable. I've been using the older version for 5 years and have never had a problem. It's a heavy-duty stand that is built like a tank. (Fran would love it!)

I also use 2 keyboards and the Quiklok M92 and agree that, though not the lightest, it folds easily and is the quickest to set up & take down. Definitely the most stable stand I have ever used and I wouldn't use any other now. Looks classy too compared with all the other stands I've seen. It took me a long time to choose which stand would be best for my needs and, fortunately, I'm happy that I made the right decision.

I also own the M92 and my remarks are as above. I am ordering the M2 2nd tier soon. I have four other stands in my studio,including the Apex,but the M92 is best for foot room and stability.

Again with these stands manufacturers go with standard heights (of people that is).

Max height is 91 cm, which makes it way to low in hand position for someone at 6' in my view.

It does look a good stand (the M91/92) but too low for me.

One thing the Apex, (and the Proel one mentioned above) do, is give good height to the taller player. Although I found the Proel to be a bit too "wobbly" with heavier keyboards.

I would also have my doubts on the m92 side to side stability. Plus the upper tier width is always determined by the width of the lower.

I am about to try the On-Stage KS 7150 with the KSA7500 universal second tier.

It has good height, looks to be rock solid (sorta reminds me of the stage 73 flatop), and the second tier is independent of the bottom section, so you can have it narrower for a laptop, for example without having to add a flat board or similar.

Just my view. Not criticising anyone else's.

Dennis, for two or three tiers the Apex is hard to beat..

As a single tier, I also like my V-stand....and as for support (company) ..Ultimate Support is unmatched..

Agreed on all counts Fran! Love mine, plus the great attached MIC BOOM on the apex deluxe....who wants to carry extra gear.

The M92 is rock solid, but if it is too low, it is. I have older tabletop stand and the second tier you are thinking of. Make sure they work together as mine won't. Maybe yours is different. Just a thought.

If you want one that in fact does keep them organ like AND IS VERY SOLID....On stage stands is the way to go...see Sweetwater sound, just look under on stage stands.

I have a pretty heavy Korg PA2XPRO on top and a CME 76 er on the bottem. SOLID.

BUT, I have the Korg front situated on two rubber pads right on the CME...then the back is supported by the on stage 2nd tier WITHOUT the arms on (once agan two rubber pads on the posts.

Yeah agree with you there Fran.. I had an Apex stand and I currently have the V-Stand, but the upper tier attachement doesn't work for me quite in the way I need, plus I do find it a little bit wobbly, but just a little , nothing like the Proel.

But when I started to accumulate pedals (of the multi variety, I found the cross bar (floor) got in the way when trying to place them when sitting to play.

The On-Stage one is the latest model, and the catalogue, and specs, from Onstage says the universal upper tier does fit to it, so I can only go on that.

Okay, cool Bernie...It's just looks from the image to not have a lot of sideways support, but I always go with the views of someone who is using a bit of gear!!

so as I said I can only trust what On-Stage say.

Main reason is it goes up to 110cms which is perfect for me.

I have had my Kurzweil K2600X ( Heavy) AND a Korg PA2XPRO on the On Stage Stands model with 2 tiers, no problem...solid as a rock.

The legs are long enough that that typical rock forward and back is minimizd. (like on some X stands)

It is not quite as heavily built as the Quick Lock model I have, but good enough I believe.

The On-Stage looks good. First time user for me, as I usually go the Ultimate/Quiklok route, so it's good to get + user feedback.

My second choice(as I am 5'8") would be On Stage, probably the best bang for the buck. I have their double X stand,tripod music stand,Universal 2nd tier,and telescoping mic boom. I am happy with all of them.

Dennis, I use the On Stage model KS7150 for my Nord C1. Best $49.00 single-keyboard stand made, especially for anyone using lots of foot pedals or an organ pedalboard (it's about the only one that fits my PK7a and is also high enough for a 6'5" organ player like me to comfortably fit under it. I have the KS7500 second tier but in my opinion, it sucks. It seems (to me) that no amount of adjustment will make it perfectly level and balanced. YMMV. The best stand (that I have, and I have 6 or7) for second tier setback is a heavy duty Quik-Lok (don't have the model # handy). I have my PA1x Pro on the bottom and my VP550 on the top - no problem seeing and getting to everything on the Korg with only about six inches of elevation.

I hesitate to recommend anything because it depends so much on the layout of the bottom keyboard and how comfortable you are with the height of the top keyboard.

I have a single X On-Stage stand and have not had any luck adding any of the UNIVERSAL second tiers. The universals fit 30mm bars, mine is 28mm.

A "RIG" is another very "personal choice" for a player.....dont listen to anyone ....try different combinations yourself, bring your KB's into the store, set them up sit and play until your comfortable playing it & what feels right for you. Will it be practical to transport on the road to gigs?...ask yourself many questions... Everyone is VERY different.

Nope, don't habe any photos anymore...I did have a couple but there gone now. I currently only have the PA2 on the lower so do not have the stack setup right now.

I would be glad to answer any questions for you anyways of how it ws setup. Really quite simple to do. But, I would only recommend what I did for home use. Not for gigging where some Bozo drunk might bang into it!

The second pic with the NP-30 as lower seems to be okay...the first one surely ain't...

I'd find it very awkward using the arranger on the top tier...button and PB/Mod wheel (when using NP-30) access would be very clumsy.

Hey I used to use a 3 stack like these pics, angled next to a B3 years ago with the band, .....
I'm glad times have changed for the better in some ways.
But as with any setup....its very personal & must be a comfort level for the individual player always first.

That's a seriously LOW position for that Polymoog, Ian... I'm sure your piano teacher would have fits with you hunched over like that, playing down by your knees!

Actually my friend, the Polymoog and the Wurly (which was on it's supplied legs) are at the same height...the bench was a tad high but made necessary by my need to access the piano on top of the Poly, which I used for clavinet type sounds(it was plugged into the Moog's filter).

There weren't many (if any) multiple stands available back then....and, actually, very few stands at all...hence the stacking being necessary.

I ended up replacing the drummer's throne with a real old wooden piano stool that wound up and down to a much greater degree...great fun.

I eventually went to a Yamaha SK-20 that was stacked on a Yamaha CP-30(nice expansive flat top)...gave me organ/synth/strings and a pretty decent wurly/pianet/pseudo Rhodes sound...and the keyboards were closer together as well.

BTW...remember how hard it was to stack things on the earlier Rhodes with the rounded top?
I remember my old one (that I bought second hand) had a shielding kit installed in the lid so anything stacked on top(probably a Hohner Clavinet) would not cause electrical interference issues.
