Can you guess the keyboard?

Can you guess the keyboard? - 10/20/08 06:11 AM

I have finally found the time to record two new songs and I would say that they are special to me for at least TWO reasons, but... before I comment on that I would like to play a little game with you all: can you guess the (arranger) keyboard they were played on?
You can find the two MP3s at the CSS site (link below); they were encoded at 320 kbps to preserve the audio quality and are thus pretty large (almost 10 Mb each). If this is a problem for someone, I can re-encode them at lower rates.

Hope you enjoy.

Great job on the tunes Dreamer - love those songs

The way it sounds like you used splits and given the scats, I'd say either the PA2X or G70. But through my tiny laptop, I couldn't tell by the drums, so not really sure.

The lead instruments - tenor, soprano, pianos - all sounded great!

Beautiful tunes, Dreamer, and fine playing.

I'd say it's a Korg.

Dreamer nice work. I think you're using the G70 for the style on Desifinado, also G70 for piano and the sax from the Pa2xpro.

For El Negro Zumbon G70 style and Pa2xPro guitar. ( possibly Nylon guitar ).

it sounds like korg. especially on "el negro zumbon", at 1.37 there two-three more style tracks that come in, gradually, as they were brought in with sliders...

is this a tricky question?

Yes!!

Actually, more than to comments on the songs themselves (that are always welcome... thank you Zuki, Ian, Steve and Tony! ) I am interested to comments on the sounds and especially... the groove...

give us a clue! is this keyboard listed bellow your posts in the other forum? or is it a surprise keyboard?

Re: Can you guess the keyboard? - 10/20/08 12:16 PM

Adimatis,
yes, it's a keyboard I already had, but in a sense now it's entirely new... can you guess why?

BTW, you have a very good ear and the reference to 1'37 of "El Negro Zumbon" is correct, but something happens also at 57" and no... they are not sliders moving, but instead something else being triggered...

Here is another clue: use your ear and try to guess what happens at 42" and then at 2'16" of Desafinado.
Here is a question to help you: how does the bossa nova style sound? Canned or not? And why?

Another suggestion: try to concentrate on the single elements of the two songs:
1- the style
2- the instruments used (namely the piano, the tenor and soprano sax, the acoustic guitar): do they remind you of something you are familiar with?
Based on these elements, some of you already guessed right, but the truth is somewhat more complex...

Is it the Korg with some sampling?

Or are you using the Korg to trigger the T2 as well?

Re: Can you guess the keyboard? - 10/20/08 03:05 PM

I think El_negro_Zumbon is a korg, not to sure since I'm not to up on the new pa800/PA2X sound.

Dreamer, What happened to the ketron you had, do you still use any ketrons?

OK, PA2X with added pads as the song progresses?

Re: Can you guess the keyboard? - 10/20/08 11:24 PM

OK; for all you enquiring minds here is the answer: it is indeed the Korg PA2X Pro, but with multipads added as the song progresses (kudos to Zuki but also to Ian, Steve, Diki, mc and Adimatis, for spotting the points where one of the multipads -a conga pattern- kicked in).

These songs are important to me because for the first time I was able to reap the fruits of my work on the PA2. I have indeed spent the past months filling up its RAM with my favorite sounds and loops and the selection took even more time than the sampling phase itself.
Speaking of the loops, I can testify that they really make a difference; of course one must be careful not to overdo the effect and balance the volumes well, but they do work. In Desafinado (for which I used a converted G-70 style: kudos to Mikey_Maestro) the style begins in the usual "stiff" way, but then at 42" there is a shaker loop starting to play and the song takes a bit of life and finally takes off at 2'15", when I added another shaker and also a conga loop.
One VERY important consequence is that playing with a non canned backing like this makes you play with more inspiration, so this is really a case where the keyboard helps the player.

yes, I had an SD1 and a Midjay but I sold both time ago. I really love the concept of sampled rhythmic loops and have tried to replicate these in my PA2X Pro.
I am currently waiting with interest the Audya, to see if it will keep its promises; otherwise I could buy a Midjay plus or an SD3, just to have that Ketron sound again.

Well... in the first place it's not "my" forum: I am just one of the moderators. The rule was made by the forum administrator and is common to many fora on the Internet. In this particular case, since createsongstyles has a lot of contents (like songs to listen to and files to download), and given the nature of the Internet, that favours the anonimity, the intention was to encourage people, by registering, to be an active part of the forum itself, instead of coming just to "take the money and run", so to speak...
