Live gig recording on Tyros 2 with vocals - 10/18/08 05:38 PM

Here's a recording from a gig I did 10 days ago with an excellent singer I've been working with the last couple of month's.

We were in a situation where we couldn't really hear each other and ourselves as well as we wanted to but, the main thing is we had fun doing it and the audience really liked it.

I thought some may enjoy hearing it so here it is.

I basically just set the onboard recorder to 40% on the volume and hope the mix turns out ok. I set it to record at the beginning of the set and just let it run. There is no editing done at all.

Scott, it’s great, I promise to hire you for my next wedding. (grin)
For a shot in the dark, no time to set up volumes and effects I feel it is a great recording. If the vocal were louder I’d give you a 9 1/2.

The styles and variation were good and your solo shows good chops, nice playing.

John C.

Scott, each time I have recorded with my S900 I had to put the keyboard well below the vocals – even though to my ear the sound was balanced.

I love the tune "Since I fell for You"
that's a super rendition. Chuck's got a good voice lots of soul!! Nice work. I enjoyed the guitar licks you played on the T2.

Hey, thanx guys. Yes, as I listen I always think about what I'd do different in playing and whatever else. I agree the guitar was heavy on the recording at the end with the vocals, sounded ok live. Getting the right mix live on the fly is the big trick.

Hey ScottL. Great to hear your live gig recording. I like the swirling + delay surround Yamaha tine sound you used and your nice guitar emulation fills. A fitting compliment to Chuck Wheeler's excellent vocals. As you and I've concured with each other in our telephone conversations over the years, our best stuff is live when we've got an audience to play to. Bravo!\

i am listening to this as i type Scott. You have to be very pleased with the way this turned out. Great vocals and well accompanied. You guys must be awesome live. The guitar great up until when you play in the higher registers but still very enjoyable.

Thanks so much for sharing your music. Its speaks volumes.

Scott! Way to go Brother! With all the T3 hype out there, it's nice to hear the T2 still has her stuff! Chuck and you sound great! And the quality of the "on the fly" recording is a testament to the advances in technology we sometimes take for granted. To pull off a recording like that just a few years ago on a live gig would have required half a truck load of sound gear and a sound man. Keep up the great work!

Scott, this is very well done, a terrific "live" performance for sure.

Love the licks you played behind the singing...just enough...very tasteful.

The singer is excellent, by the way...great phrasing.

Hi ScottY

Thanx, much appreciated. You're right about the live play being the time to record.

Thanx for the kind words. Yes, the guitar I'll probably try a different one next time. I could hear in my mind what I wanted to get, kind of the B.B. King sound but while the sound I used passed in the live situation I was wanting those high notes to come off a bit differently.

Sounds good! One remark though (coming from a drummer ... Cut back a little on the fills. There are too many in this song, and since there is very little variety in them, it's just "too much".

Thanx for the comments, as a drummer myself, I thought the same thing. A little lighter fill would have been my preference, although doing it live as basically an unrehearsed experiment, it came off and seemed to fit the energy of the room at the time. A lot is lost just listening to an audio recording it seems to me.
