Remember how you couldn't find styles you wanted? How bored you got using the same few acceptable styles? How you hated the way the OS loaded new styles? Just reminding you of your own criticisms (and I must add, mine.)

Those are endearing qualities for some users, Don.

The problem is........Donny is totally bored with the Yamaha stuff..and wants to stay in his comfort zone...so back to a PA800..

Why he doesn't just apply his time to a good board amazes me...

Donny, OS 2.0 is supposed to add 42 Platinum styles (whatever that means). Actually, I like the Korg styles very much now, and have been varying them by adding different combinations of pads.

I know you will make wonderful music whatever you own!

Blessings

I'm willing to bet those "Platinum" Styles will rely heavily on the new voices in this OS release. Makes sense for them to release the new sounds (similar to SA voices).., then to create additional styles to showcase those new voices.

Donny, I identify, I always want what I once had it's not a bad thing for some of us that's just the way it is. Problem is all these boards give you enough to love and hate at the same time. Reminds of that blonde I dated in high school, but her brunette friend had.............ah never mind you get the drift.

Graham not sure you read in another post, but I spoke to the Korg Pro Arranger Product Manager at the recent arranger fiesta. "Platinum" is just marketing hype. They had to call them something. I guess they could have just as easily named them "Gold " styles.

Hi Donny,
if you end up with another PA800, let me know.
I've got my user style collection sorted out for the XRM database ( just in case you didn't keep any of your stuff) http://www.palibrarian.net/
Makes sorting user styles a breeze.

best wishes

I really like some of the PA-800 styles--I play them on my PSR-3000 and after a small amount of tuning they sound pretty good. I'll bet they would sound just as good on your Tyros.

Re: Trade my TYROS 1 for your PA800 + cash - 10/13/08 03:39 PM

I think the critical word is BORED...

Donny's BORED of the Yamaha, wants a PA800 back, so he can get BORED with it again Then get a T3, get BORED with that, get a G70, get BORED with that, go back to an SD-1, get BORED with that, and so on and so forth...

I'm sorry, but for all your talk about it being the 'player not the gear', you seem to want to find your primary inspiration in what you play ON, rather than what you play on IT. In the meantime, after three years plus of playing the G70, I find absolutely no need to even LOOK at another arranger.

But possibly because what I PLAY is of FAR more importance than what IT does. Minimize what the arranger does (bass and drums, primarily) can open you up to a myriad of imported styles, whereas relying on them for ALL the parts makes translation much trickier. To avoid repetition in what you have to listen to (probably the source of the boredom) play it all yourself...

If I'm bored, sadly, I only have myself to blame!

The new Korg OS is neat, but in fairness, it is still catchup time to the T2/3 when it comes to SA2 type sounds. Maybe after they add in a bunch more of these sounds, styles that exploit them fully it'll be worth revisiting, but personally, I think you are just searching for variety... Or possibly looking for something easier to trade for a T3 than a T1

Given the PA800's limited style selection, can't you see you are going to get bored even quicker than you were last time? With the T3 out and available, and you so used to the T1, surely that should be your antidote to the boredom blues? You are only going to lose money on the PA800 when you get bored of it and change to the T3

Better the devil you DON'T know than the devil you do...

I think this is the point. Better to have a fabulous and limited (but not in my opinion) style selection vs boring.

Re: Trade my TYROS 1 for your PA800 + cash - 10/13/08 06:12 PM

I guess this depends on the RANGE of material you are performing, Zuki. If you only have a couple of polka styles (just for example), even if they are great, if you do a couple of DOZEN polka tunes, they are going to get repetitive...

Conversely if you do a few zydeco tunes, a few cajun country, a few ska, a few schottische, and you can't find ANY styles for them (just as example, again, I know perhaps some of those style might be covered), you are just as boned!

Everyone here has pretty different areas of style needs... Yours are apparently covered. But it is erroneous to think that just because YOU are happy, everyone else will be... Donny already found the PA800's styles limiting. Do you think that his repertoire has gone DOWN that much since?

We can already see that his limitless capacity to become bored quicker than anyone else certainly hasn't diminished in ANY way!

Certainly, cheer him on as he revisits your favorite arranger... but be prepared to be dismayed quickly as he drops it for something else in a few months' time...

Oh, and you remember the classic definition of insanity...?

Doing the same thing, over and over again, expecting a different result each time you do it

Re: Trade my TYROS 1 for your PA800 + cash - 10/13/08 06:20 PM

I'm cheering I gave up also the 1st time around on the 800, but sure was glad to revisit, because I knew deep down it was something special. Every other board I dumped - no looking back!

The style situation on the 800 suits me well, for sure. I am trying to use just about every style in that board - they are all THAT GOOD. Other boards might be able to cover more ground, but they ALL SOUND THE SAME...that is my contention.

Anyway, I'm just happy I've zoned in like you and a few others and can keep growing, instead of being in constant turmoil.

Re: Trade my TYROS 1 for your PA800 + cash - 10/13/08 06:34 PM

Maybe I just perform so much hence the boredom more then the KB itself.
Honestly I now have acquired a Roland E60 from Fran to have a NO PRESSURE Audition for a week or so......all my G70 knowledge is coming back to me as we speak. Its really wonderful unit to play IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO DIG INTO IT (again ) & make it your own.
Its a refreshing change mentally & musically.

Re: Trade my TYROS 1 for your PA800 + cash - 10/13/08 08:32 PM

I must have been nuts this morning, thinking about a PA800 again!
Fran straightened me right out BIG TIME...& made me realize how really great the Roland E60 really is for the needs of the gigging musician ! After he took me out to a delicious Italian Dinner this evening with the Lovely Kathleen & discussed options I borrowed the E60 & took it home to my studio for another tryout. Let me tell you in the last few hours of testing this unit I'm really enjoying this unit. Lightweight only 28 lbs, a USB connection that really works it recognizes just like another drive on the PC.... super easy to transfer all my G70 files into the E60 and they all work perfectly ...I could gig this baby tomorrow if I wanted to. Makeup & Cover editing tools for Styles & SMF are a pleasure to use & utilize plus SMF markers also.. They all sound great with Lyrics & pre-Chord readouts too, all nice features for sure. It has 76 keys , real nice key-feel, no need for a Hard Drive(Compact flash card) a quality build & speakers too. No wonder why Don Mason switched to the E50 also & I can also see why the E60 is so hard to find, No One wants to get rid of them ...
Decisions, decisions,.... I'm gonna dig deep into this baby all week....Who knows I may end up a Roland man again very very soon

Stay tuned!......

Let's start the 'Donny Watch' right now... even before he gets it.

I predict within a month he will go back to Yamaha.

That girl in the secretary pool LOOKS pretty good, but you know she'll be a bunch of work, and at least you KNOW all the ups and downs with the wife....
