Dan,
Last night's episode, where Abigal travels to Paris and then to England and then back to the USA was one of the best hours of TV I've ever watched. The acting and the story was magnificant!

I agree.. I am learning a lot of things I did not know and the acting of all the characters is tremendous... Have you watched the " the making of " ...very cool to see how it's done.

I always disliked History in High School.
They taught it as "time and dates", and not much more.

If they would have had the 'Adams' series way back then, and just showed it during class, it would certainly have added much interest to an otherwise boring subject.

It is outstanding, and all the characters are great, but if I had to pick a favorite it is Ben Franklin.

Speaking of HBO...anyone else watching "In Treatment"? I'm hooked on that mini series too...and like John Adams...great acting!

HBO is what regular television could, and should be.

The actor David Morse plays George Washington. The make-up artist did an exceptional job. The close-ups shots scare the heck out of me - it solidifies the vision i've always had of GW.

I think the series shines because we DO KNOW something about that history. I don't think school-agers are looking at this series from the same perspective as we elders are. If I was still teaching, I'd attempt to add this to my presentation, but I know it would mean nothing to young teens who can't even grasp the first Iraq war.

Don't get me started - we have let our educational system slip into a deep chasm. Everything's watered down so that Johnny and Jane don't go home crying to their snooty parents that the teacher's too hard and the stuff they teach is boring. Just plug them into an X-box

Kids today are lucky if they even know who the President is? It's a very sad state of affairs for our children today for sure. Just look around... its partly our fault also for letting it get so bad for the last 30+ years....I wonder what John Adams would say if he ever would see what is going on in society today here in the USA?

Re: OT : HBO Subscribers - 04/01/08 06:44 AM

I'd like to restate my feelings. Actually, today's kids are not much different than we were when we were in school. Yes, they have more tech goodies and stuff, but they learn what we teach. Unfortunately, the WE has changed. Education has been taken out of the hands of educators and put into the hands of bureaucrats, lawyers, whiny parents and undedicated individuals. In 33+ yrs of education I never met a real teacher who couldn't tell you what was best for the children. Why they didn't always do that is a long story in itself, but it stems back to loss of control of the system.

But, back to John Adams. I think the great acting and writing certainly helps viewers understand the history better. But are school-agers equipped and ready to digest the message? As I would say about my old classmates too, I think not.

I haven't watched the John Adams series, but when I saw the HBO reference my blood started to boil. Anyone else have a cable system that now blocks FREE HBO on Channel 3?

All my cable ready TV's used to get HBO on them without scrambling and then in January Time Warner Cable pulled the plug. so now I have to purchase boxes for all 6 of my TV's, one for each family member and the kitchen (oops I feel embarrassed saying how many TV's I have, oh well).
