Any Derby Parties...?

Here in Kentucky, Derby parties are BIG DEALS!.

I've been playing several for years: 1 at a country club in Louisville (site of the Derby) for over 30 years (8:00 AM till the busses leave for the race) : 1 at another club in Lexington (1:00 PM before and after the race). Usually, I play a Derby Eve party, but had to cancel this year.

I'm frantically trying to get well enough to pull these two off (pneumonia).

Anyone else out there working Derby Parties?

Russ, I gotta go along with BEBOP on this one. I know we would alllike to play with Jimmy Smith and "Groove" Holmes and Grover again, but....no point in getting to the gig early .

What kind of music do you play on such event, Russ? Theme from Mister Ed?:P

Nothing special, except for "Run For The Roses", and "My old Kentucky Home".

Taiki, while I've got you, I went to a new Vietnamese restaurant restaurant. It was excellent. There was what was called a "fish" sauce served with the rice. It had no fish taste or smell. Is this a sauce made from fish or meant to pe used over fish? People were spooning small portions over the rice. The waiter was an older gentlemen who didn't understand English, and there was no one elese around to ask.

It could've been fish sauce (nuoc nam in Vietnamese...Nam Pla in Thai/Lao) but one of a lesser grade as the better the quality the stronger the smell and flavor. It's like the difference between extra virgin oil and virgin oil. High grade nuoc nam is rather expensive. But if it didn't taste or smell like fish sauce it's likely that it was soy sauce as that's often added to season rice. Tastier would be soy sauce with chopped garlic. Another seasoning sometimes added to rice is sesame oil. It has a nutty flavor.
