Made My decision!

Made My decision! - 01/06/04 07:40 PM

I've made my decision. I'm going to buy a Roland G-800. I know it's an oldie but I'm told by a few people that own them, that they are the greatest.(A bit too heavy- but well worth it). It also works for me pricewise. All I gotta do now is find one...

(By the way- any know if its worth it for me to get the g-1000? What does it have that the 800 doesnt have?)

Zip drive, SCSI, insert effects, assignable pads, 16 track sequencer[advanced],aftertouch, xtra banks of sounds[many from JV's],On board memory for style links, and much more...You will be happy with the G800, but won't know what you missed with the G1000..

I'll give you another opinion about the G800. I had it for two weeks when it started developing problems. The spring in the Joy-stick broke, and had to be ordered from Lord knows where. The buttons started sticking after a few months-after the paint wore off them. Registration memories wouldn't remember Transpose. The sounds were down a couple of menus, and many were duplicates or so close you couldn't tell them from each other. It has been 7 or 8 years ago and I can't recall everything. Most of the problems I had were addressed in the 1000.
The guy I sold it to never did figure out the operating system entirely. He developed cancer and died and I'm not too sure the G800 didn't cause it!
Seriouly, do yourself a favor and get the G1000.

The 1000 is everything that the 800 is PLUS all the stuff that Fran mentioned. The zip disk alone will make it more valuable as a resale item too. Look for a 1000 if you can find it.

If you're planning on keeping it a while, I suggest the G1000 over the 800. Simple logic here, the 1000 is bigger and better. If size or weight is an issue, then the 800 is certainly a formidable machine. I remember the tightness of the keyboard - kind of nice for a non-weighted item. Good luck.

Cassp, You may be mistakenly thinking of the G600 rather than the G800...The G600 was smaller and had a lighter key touch[61 keys]..The G 800 is only 1 pound lighter and the same housing as the G1000[41 lbs.]

In my music store, I had so many problems with the G800's operating system (hard to use) and with so many problems with the joystick breaking (the aftertouch on the keyboard was being controlled by a faulty sensor in the pitch bend/ modulation lever) that I stopped selling this model after the first 4 came into my store. It was not until the G1000 came out for me to start selling Roland arrangers again. I agree with all the posts here that the G1000 would be a much wiser choice if you can find one at a similar price. Some might prefer the G800 because of it's smaller size, but I disliked the way it worked.

You should be able to find a G1000 for around $800.00-$1400.00...just puta WTB adv in a few Buy/Sell places and they'll find you for sure.

Oops, Fran, I think you're right. They say that memory is the second thing to go. When I remember what went first, I'll be able to remember what went second. Play on!
