Help PC Gurus Hard-rive problem....

A friend gave me a 40G Toshiba laptop hard drive he took out of a broken laptop he stripped.......I was going to use it as a USB backup external drive & put it in a usb case .......when I hooked it up to thew case I heard the usb link alert and can feel the hard drive moving BUT
It is not recognized when I look for it in my computer list of drives.....

do I need to format it if so how if I cant find it?

Donny, I don't think that is the best use of that hard drive....the 40 Gig Toshiba will fit nicely in your K/B T-1 T-2, don't know about Keton or Korg or whatever K/B you are using now....you can find out but asking here. The external H/D cases mainly use a reg H/D not laptop. I think that is your problem, not compatible....

tr I have 2 other external 9mm LT Hd's that work perfectly in the external cases.

external cases and was told by a computer
repair tech...said it was a compatibility problem.....did you try to install it into your desktop to check the drive and format it.....

It may not be partitioned or is corrupted, so follow the instructions below.
Start, Control Panel, Administration Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management.
See if the drive shows up in the list, (Until it is partitioned a Drive letter will not be assigned) if it does then Right click the drive and you will find the option to Partition and Format it. (WARNING Do NOT make it an active partition, or select any drive that has a letter assigned)
If the drive does not show up, then there is probably either a bad connection, faulty drive or an incompatibility problem. (Disk checking utilities for specific drives are usually available from the drive manufactures web site)

Thanx for teh help....I looked in disk manager but to no avail I dont see it listed but I feel it running?

You can get an adapter which converts the 44 pin "notebook" drive connector into a standard IDE 40pin + power interface. You could then put the drive in your PC as a "Native" hard disc which might make it more amenable to reformatting.

Also the USB housing probably assumes the drive is a "Master"; could be worth checking if there are any jumpers on the drive? It might be set to "Cable select" which could confuse your USB housing, clutching at straws a bit but you never know...

Having just had a look at that Toshiba site I don't hold out much hope that its a jumper setting issue!

Like Bill said. Also Mac mentioned IDE compatability - that's a biggie. The USB case is probably for IDE drives, and if it's running it's getting power. It probably has something wrong with it. I lost a 60 gb the same way.

As I stated earlier, I think it's a compatibility issue with the external usb case.....Like Mac said, get an adapter and put it into your desk top and then check the status...If you don't want it, ship it to me, I'll take it off your hands and even pay for the shipping....hehehehe
