Another song - ambient

Another song - ambient - 11/25/05 01:19 AM

This is a more recent song I did last year I think.

This was sequenced on a computer using free programes which I abtained from ComputerMusic magazine (thanks to them!), also some Trinity, the recorder plays the solo once with a lot of delay effect.

Actually, I couldn't find the completed version, so this version is apparently missing the solo at about 1:20 and again at about 3:10. Also, the fade out isn't quite spot on. One more point: the mp3 conversion seems to have sucked quite a bit out of the sound.

However only a handful of people have ever heard this track, so I would really appreciate your comments on this one.

Enjoy! http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0IQ89C40QRD9T2YKOWXKY8C9NX

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/26/05 11:20 AM

Thanks tcon and twonuts, I appreciate the comments. You've given me encouragement to do more of this kind of work, because I havn't been doing sequencing in over a year.

Thanks Tony, I don't have so much with the violin, because a lot of it I did when we were living in seperate countries, however, here's another, faster Klezmer-type one, which was on the same CD as the other track with the violin on the other thread (I never did anything with the CD in the end). Hope you enjoy it! http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34I20DMB734WZ3IIFH0RZS2QZ9

Zalmi,
that's really cool! I love the combination of modern rhytms and traditional sounds (the violin). Who wrote the music?

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/26/05 02:15 PM

Hi there Dreamer!
I assume you're referring to the second more lively tune (it gets confusing with more than one song in a thread) - I thought actually the rythm was not modern - it's a Klezmer rythm, maybe this is a kind of updated version of the rythm - not sure.

All these tunes are old Jewish Hasidic melodies. This particualr one is about 80 years old I think. Some of the others are older - 200 years or more.

Thanks BluesPlayer.

Did anyone notice the heavy use of reverb? I deliberately used a lot - especially fade in and out - to give the impression of entering a large hall and then exiting. It doesn't sound quite right to me now, though. Especially I think there shouldn't be so much reverb on the bass.

What do you think?

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/26/05 11:03 PM

Zalmi,
I agree that the bass (and the kick drum) shouldn't have much reverb.
Another thing I noticed: at the beginning of your songs there is always a strange noise, like a white noise... was that a deliberate thing?

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 11:06 AM

Zalmi....I finally got to hear it and it's great sounding...the reverb don't bother me,
I just love the whole thing the violins are always a plus for me....

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 04:51 PM

Thanks Tony, interesting that what bothers one is ok to another. My brother is very talented, I think he is more musically sensitive than I am (he picks up on pitch discrepencies much better than I do), and he's got a real soul in his playing. I'm going to forward your messages to him!

Dreamer, I think the white noise you're talking about (which isn't on the last track I posted) is what I intended to be a kind of atmospheric wind/air/blowing sound, which is basically meant to set the atmospheric mood for the song. Do you think it's out of place or ambiguos? I always appreciate honest observations. Thanks.

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 09:39 PM

Zalmi,
actually (but this is just my taste) I would have preferred an eerie sound or maybe a pad at the beginning, to set the mood.

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 09:42 PM

Fair enough. I'll keep it mind for the next track I do in that kind of style. I'll make sure to give you a listen before I finish it! Thanks,

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 09:48 PM

Very nice Zalmi,

Forgive me, but I don't recognize any of these Hasidic tunes (and I know at least hundreds of them) - where are they from?

Very nice how you mixed the 'old' with the 'new.' I think there's a market for that - but I would suggest that if you want to break in to the Hasidic market you should start with some more well-known melodies.

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 10:07 PM

Thank you Chony.

The first in the thread is a Mozitzer Niggun (Proik Yos Anoch), which is quite famous, the second is a Lubavitcher Niggun (R' Leivik's I think, sung on Simchas Torah) which is only famous in Chabad. I'm sure you'll recognise this one: http://www.synthzone.com/ubbs/Forum37/HTML/012166.html which I had posted earlier.

I especially appreciate your comments because you are obviously familiar with the Chasidic market. I actually tend to deliberately pick unusual songs, in order to promote them, and in order to bring fresh sounds.

Please let me know what you think of the song in the thread above.

Zalmi

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/27/05 11:41 PM

The first one I didn't recognize; the second - I don't think I'm wrong - is not R' Levi Yitzchok's Nigun. RLY's Nigun is a high powered fast song.

I just listened to your other track. Very well done. If you put together another few - you can sell this no problem. I only listened to this on laptop speakers and real monitors can reveal things that I haven't yet heard - but overall, this is good and original material.

This track (thirst) is an intensely spritual song - and obviously the fact that so many people here have been moved by it - just proves this. It is a song of powerful longing and thirst and the point isn't to enjoy it - but to experience it...

When are you coming to NY? I deffinitely think that if you're interested you can produce. Let me know when you're here.

Re: Another song - ambient - 11/28/05 09:28 AM

Thanks Choni.

As it happens I planned to come in this week to New York for a four month stay! I'm just waiting for a Visa, and need to sort a couple of other things out as well.

I'ld love to meet up with you in New York. I'll let you know when I have an exact travel date.

Here's another couple of tracks in the meantime: http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2H2RRS1XWVPAU3DMLK77JTUT7E and http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=31OGCLHVU0UO81UEJ0UCJ8K39C

Again, all Chabad Chasidic ancient melodies.

Hi Claudio thanks for the posts, I sent you an email with attachments of some sheet music. You can respond via email if you want.

(I am older than you, but younger than probably most members of this forum. When I recorded this music, I was only a few years older than you. Age doesn't count on internet forums, right?

Thanks Claudio! Your enthusiasm is contageous! Glad you really like it. I found that most young people don't appreciate it. But then they are not musicians like you are.

When will we hear some of your stuff Claudio?

I actually still have somewhere the midi files (I think) of Proik. I'll see if I can find them.

All the best,

Zalmi
