Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 05/23/00 12:19 AM

Hello!!!!!!!!

I have a problem with my PSR9000 when I try
to play MIDI files. When I load some songs
from the Zip drive I get the message "illegal
data" on the screen. Why? All the MIDI files
I have are downloaded from the internet and
when I play them with my computer I have no
problems.

People have been complaining that the PSR9000
is poor on playing MIDIs. I can not agree
100%. It is true that some of the MIDIs sound
horrible with this keyboard but most of them
sound great. I think it depends of the MIDI
file you are playing.

I have been thinking of buying the MFC10
pedal. It is very expensive (2100 finnish mk)
but still. I would like to know if anyone of
you have ever used it. Any comments about
this pedal?

Last monday I was on a presentation of the new Roland VA-7. This keyboard is great but for me the PSR9000 is still the best. The
model they had on the demostration was not
the production version. The OS was not ready
and it had many bugs (my dealer told me).
Next month the keyboard will be available
with the ready made OS and the same will
happen with the PSR9000. Then it is the best
time to compare these two keyboards. The
variprase is G-R-E-A-T that I know by now.

You are probably trying to load the midifiles from the disc menu in PSR9000. You can't do that. You must use the song player. Turn on the song player and press one of the song buttons. You'll then get a directory list and can load your midis from that.

I turned on the song player and used the song
button but still the same happened to me.

Hi Micco
Maybe you already know this:
YAMAHA has the most powerful MIDI standard. It's called XG.
PSR 9000 is XG compatible. Download XG Midi files, and you will hear the difference. Once you get into XG Midi authoring, GM sounds stale.
If you are just playing GM Midi files, you are not experiencing the real power of your PSR9000 MIDI playback.

would like to try them. I also forgot to ask
that from where can I download WAV and AIFF
files?

Thank you!!!!

Shakil, Personally, I dissagree the XG is superior when it comes to SMF playback. If you are comparing the Yamaha GM set to their XG set, naturally the XG sounds better, it is their best patches. I think across the board SMF playback , the GS[ROLAND] is still the best, most sequences are written for GS, the playback is the way the originator intended it to be. I'll match up favorablly, my G1000[Roland] selecting the G1000 gm set, against the competition, especially Yamaha, even Solton. The GS instruments never play a bad sounding SMF[unless it is a poor sequence], I can not say the same for the PSR series[With XG or their GM], or the Solton X1,and of course Korgi series. I am not saying the other instruments do not sound good, they DO,All instruments have their strenght and weaknesses in the sounds. But, for SMF playback, Give me GS...Fran

Ahhh, we are talking about SMF playback etc?? Well, I would say GeneralMusic does that the best, its got to be said. If there is a keyboard that I have owned and noted for its strength, it would have to be GEM for midi & SMF playback. The worst in my opinion is the Korg I series, they just sound so electronic and totally unnatural.

Of course, each keyboard that has its own programmed SMF sequences will not sound the same elsewhere but only best where it was originally programmed. But if you want to test how good your SMF playback is on your own keyboard, try the TUNE1000 songs, that will test the sequencer!

Fran
I would agree with you. But you have to be realistic. If you play GM on an XG instrument, it's not going to use the best available patched. I think on an XG instrument, you should play an XG MIDI file.
and on GS instrument, a GS MIDI file. All of them say GM MIDI compatible, but all that means is that they will use one GM bank. There are lot of things that you can't do with GS or GM, that you can do with XG. The most important being, using more than one drum kits.

Micco, you can download XG MIDI files from http://xgmidi.wtal.de/index.html
go to XG MIDI Library, XG Cover Songs ( you will find your favorite songs in XG format) and other peopels original stuff in XG format under XG songs...

Have fun.

One of the reasons that GM MIDI files don't play good on KORGs is that KORG can't accept sysex data in SONG mode, so the GM file can't the proper effects for a song.

Roland and Yamaha's are great for that, you can program anything you want in a MIDI file.

Re: Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 05/24/00 01:46 PM

Shakil, I agree with you , mostly. The capability of some instruments to mix two drum kits is not a GS,GM,XG ect. format problem, but a hardware design limitation. If you sequence a song and use two kits, it will playback on a GS instrument. The channel asignment may have to be edited[GS can be assigned to 2 channels for drums[ch 10 is fixed]...As a side note, I have XG software[sound waves] and GS software[sound waves] that I can "A" "B" the sequences, and the GS is better across the board than the XG waves, particularly, acoustic piano, guitar, choir, strings, orchestral, and drums including cymbals[43 kits on G1000].. the XG is comparable in brass, electric piano...After all is said and done, there is no loser in Roland or Yamaha, its a matter of personal choices....Fran

Fran
the reason you can have two drum kits in G-1000 because it has two midi ports (32 channels).
on an XG (yamaha) instruments, you can have as many drumkits as you want, even on a single MIDI port.

I must say that the best guitar effects are on the Roland Sound Canvas modules (G800/G1000) SC880...

I think the new VA7 uses the same engine as SC8850.

Re: Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 05/28/00 02:34 AM

I downloaded some XG MIDI files and again I
get the message "Illegal Data" on screen and
I would like to know why?

From where can I download WAV and AIFF files?

THE VA-7 IS THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!

If you connect a G-1000 to a XV-3080 and a VP-9000 you would get the same
sound. (who have so much money...)
What you won't get is the new arrangements/styles that are awsome
(maybe not spelled right, but anyway). The sounds in G-1000 and SC-8850 is
basically the same sound-set, and the ones you'll find in VA-series is based
on a combination of XV-series as well as the GM2 instruments from SC-8850.
However the D/A Converters on VA-7 are considerably better and frankly
speaking - I am totally astonished when I listen to VA-7 - I have never
heard anything better - not even from Rolands synthesizers and others......

mico about waves etc....
try http://www.samplenet.co.uk/

very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 06/14/00 04:25 AM

I tried again to play some XG MIDI files and
standard MIDI files and again I got the
message "illegal data" and now I ask the 3th
time why? I also tried to play the same MIDI
files with my computer and I did not have any
problems.

I also got the same message when I tried to
load some styles from the zip drive using the
direct disk button. I have the 2.02 operating
system installed in my keyboard.

I also would like to know how to get the
printed manual of the 2.0 operating system.
I live in Finland and I have send the
registration card to Yamaha so do they send
the manual to the customers?

And again I ask about the MFC10 pedal. Has
anyone of you used it? Should I buy it?

Re: Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 06/19/00 08:21 AM

I suggest that you send the XG and GM midi files you are trying to play on PSR9000 to YAMAHA and ask them.

I remember once I was trying PSR8000 at a store, and it would give the same error, and would not play some XG midi files. Maybe there is something in the OS that needs to be changed. If YAMAHA have the exact files that are giving problem, then they will have no excuse.

BUG YAMAHA until they solve the problem or have an ansewer for you.

Re: Something to say and ask about PSR9000 - 06/19/00 09:27 PM

Micco, here are some things to check. first, make sure the files you are trying to play have a .MID extension at the end of the file name. You can check this by looking at the files on your computer. Your computer may have some programs loaded that will recognize a MIDI file with another extension, and play it. The PSR will only recognize files with a .MID extension at the end of the name. If you find a different extension at the end, try changing the name to one that ends with .MID and see what happens. It is also possible that when you are downloading the files, you are saving them as HTML documents, instead of MID files. This is an easy mistake to make when downloading files thru your web browser. You can tel which type of file you have by right mouse clicking on the file name and selecting "information" The file type shoud be MIDI file, any other will not play, even if you rename it. Try these things out, and let me know what you find, and we will go on from there.
Hope this helps,
Dave Waldman
