Karen Carpenter Replacement

Karen Carpenter Replacement - 01/10/07 04:21 PM

My son gave me the Tony Bennett Duets CD for Christmas. Since I've played big band stuff for 30+ years it is right up my alley. I love it.

Tony does "Because of You" as a duet with k.d. Lang. Karen Carpenter has always been my favorite female vocalist but k.d. Lang is very close IMO. Now if only k.d. would sing "Merry Christmas Darling ......"

Tom, ever heard K D Lang sing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah?" Incredible.

The only other modern singer that floors me is (was) Eva Cassidy. First time I heard her ("Over The Rainbow"), it brought tears to my eyes. What a shame she is dead. Died at age 36 or so.

My favorite female vocalist of all time is Ella Fitzgerald... and k d Lang is certainly in my top 5. Not sure of the other 3, but Karen Carpenter might be right up there. Yea, k d is dynamite.

I like the song, "I'm Confessing" that Tony and k.d.Lang did as a duet.

Terrific arrangement...absolute perfection.

k.d (an Alberta girl, eh?) does a great duet with Roy Orbison on 'Crying'.

Crying is awesome, Karen Carpenter has always been one of my favorites, and Eva Cassidy was incredible as well. And Lady Ella............wow. All great singers.

I was glad I had the honor of meeting Ella in the early 60's. She was divorced but still close to Ray Brown. She appeared several times on the Steve Allen Show, and I met her when she visited Ray. Very mild lady...sadly, I believe she was hussled many times by agents, producers, men. A really sweet soul. And one of the classic singers of all time. Besides her voice quality, it was her ability to scat and interpret in her unique jazz style that made her one of my all-time favorites.

I also appreciate all the others everyone has mentioned.

Interesting we're talking about Ella. Just today, the US Postal Service issued an Ella Fitzgerald stamp.

That's interesting, Glenn. The Royal Mail in the U.K. are about to release Beatles stamps. Here's a link:

I guess I can say that if my old band wasn't as good as The Beatles, at least we could lick 'em now!
