It can drive you crazy. I've created 100's of User Programs for all my songs and put them in the Music Assistant. After listening to a recording of one of last weeks gigs I realized the balance between the styles and what I was playing was off also it took too much time picking the tunes in Music Assistant. So this week I'm changing the balance and setting up set list. CRAZY

One thing for sure..the "average Joe" will get frustrated with the G70 or possibly any top workstation arranger..It is not for novice..even experienced people run into problems[learning curve]...but in the end it is human error..

I truly believe the G70 is the most advanced arranger workstation currently available..
It covers more bases than any other product..

Montana..do you have version3 installed?

It can make you post endlessly about getting the Chord Sequencer back.....!

It can make you sound like a 'live band' rather than a machine....

It can give you a hernia (but your over 45 lb. grandkids could do that, too!)....

It can provoke negative reactions from people who probably haven't played one since OS1 (if at all!).....

It can make you taller, more attractive to women, and clear up your acne....

(OK, that last one was an exaggeration!)

Congratulations on the G70 Fran. Is it G70 and Mediastation now, or do you still have some other goodies?

Re: What can the G70 do..................... - 05/31/07 11:11 AM

BTW, Montana.... If ALL your UPGs are skewed one way or another (and you can hardly blame the G70 for THAT, sounds like a monitoring issue) between Keyboard and Style Parts, there is a simple Balance knob, that can skew things back the way you want without having to adjust the UPG's...

And, you probably already know this, but just in case.... It REALLY helps to tape yourself under gig conditions (same PA, volume levels etc.) to get an objective idea of the balance you need between 'live' Parts and backing. Most of us make the mistake of making our 'played' Parts too loud, so we can hear ourselves well, but when played back, often shows us 'swamping' the backing.

Oh, and don't forget to include your voice, if you sing at the gig. That can often change the perception of a mix...

Craig, pretty much..The G70, Media Station and the G1000..

I sold the DisCover5, since the G70 replaces that ok, and possibly the G1000 may be next..I am not really sure..It is up on Ebay now ..If I get a quick buyer..I will let it go..But if I think about it too long..I may pull it off Ebay..

Re: What can the G70 do..................... - 05/31/07 05:35 PM

Fran, I only tried the G 70 once, about a year and a half ago down at Washington Music. I remember being very impressed with it, it is, after all, a Roland, and they're hard to beat. I would have bought one except for 2 reasons. The weight issue has become a big thing for me since I do over 300 gigs per year, sometimes 3 a day. And I got a really good price on a Tyros 1. When I bought the T1, I was just going to fool around with it and maybe use it in the studio. But after a week or so, I really loved it on the road and I've been using it close to a year now. But like I've said before, I still wouldn't part with my G 1000. To this day nothing has the brilliance of that board. Good luck with your final decision.

Joe

If you don't feel up to doing it yourself, straight away, your dealer ought to be able to do the upgrade for you...

And don't even bother with OS2, OS3 is SO much better...

Ah, the draw of 76 keys, live sound of the G70. Looks promising, the only thing that stops me is that the Yamaha OS fits like a comfortable pair of broken in shoes. After all the hours spent of setting registrations, styles, renaming styles. I hate to part with Tyros 2 I love the board,(T2) but still am unhappy with 61 keys.

Your comments are correct. Yes I can use the balance knob but I just as soon fix them all. I'll be recording the gigs again this week and tweek and problems I find. This being my first arranger keyboard I'm figuring things out as I go along but I do think it is a worth while journey.

Have you tried a 76 controller keyboard MIDI'ed into your T2? If you like the G70's action (best 76 on the planet, IMO!), take a look around and see if you can pick up a used Roland A70 controller. It's the ONLY thing other than arrangers Roland put this action in!

Or even a lightweight 88 from M-Audio or similar....

That is interesting. I thought the E 80 was an upgrade to the G 70.
why did you let me buy the wrong keyboard then Fran???????

Re: What can the G70 do..................... - 06/01/07 11:02 AM

BeBop that is one of the reasons I like the new top models from Roland...they are a OS upgrade away from a new model..

Your E80 has some edges over the G70[but not the key feel]..Version3 software brought the G70 up to par with the E80[almost)..

The version3 update made me finally decide to make the move to the G70, and eventually[today] replaced my G1000..

Diki, I have used a Casio Privia 88 keys to midi to the PSR 3000 I sold recently. No doubt about it works, but I prefer to have the controls right in front of me on the the board I find myself using lots of G70 converted styles on the T2. It may be time for a change , but not going to jump to quick.

That's a real plus for Roland. Makes a lot of sense. I've been stricly a Yammie player, but with OS upgrades and 76 keys with Roland that may be enough for me to jump to the Roland brand in the near future.

Re: What can the G70 do..................... - 06/01/07 12:27 PM

If the Privia is just a 'dumb' MIDI controller for the T2, can't you place them so close together that the T2 sits on top of the Privia and obscures all it's controls (apparently, you don't need them) and gets the keyboards right next to each other (B3 style), in which case it's not too big a jump to the T2's controls...

Plus, a set of Yamaha control switches (there's an input for a 10 button footswitch thingy, isn't there?) can do away with a LOT of panel switching....

Sounds like that could be a good workaround. That footswitch it the MFC 10. Thanks

Re: What can the G70 do..................... - 06/03/07 06:50 AM

You know, there's probably some good money to be made by the first guy that can program a laptop to act as a chord sequencer for arrangers that don't have this feature...

All the program needs to do is sync to the arranger, record the chord input channel, and play it to the NTA (Note to Arranger) channel, and just do a loop on command...

Not too difficult, as MIDI programs go.... Any takers?

Good Luck, I see you've got competition.
