note values

hi all, does anyone know where the following info is available,advanced notes eg, i know the basics 3/4 is ,123,123 and4/4 is 1234,1234 but some notes are broken down into 8th or16th and i want to understand to breakdown the movement of the beats,my pc keyboard doesnt allow me to show music notes so i hope you understand what i want,thanks in advance ,mike

Sometimes the smaller note values are placed in a count-in to establish the rhythm for you. It sets the pace for the rhythmic structure, that's all. If the piece is simple, you can use a simple count, but a more intricate lead-in can be helpful if you're unsure of a rhythm.

Burried deep in the psrtutorial site under "Resources" are some Music Tips. One of those "lessons" is an article I wrote on Counting Out Loud. It shows you how to handle those eight notes as well as the dotted eight notes and sixteenth notes. Here is a direct link:
