Question for users that make and sell CD'S.. - 04/07/05 03:25 PM

For all of you folks out there that make and sell your own CD's, do you use your own music or that of others? If you use someone
else's music, do you pay or have to pay Royalties, is so, to whom do you pay, how do you pay???? Interesting questions that I hope to get some feed back from....thank you.

In my case most of the music is mine, ANd when I record something that is not mine it'll be very old hymns.

I hope it helps [partially ]

I make and sell copy CD's and pay the royalties through the Harry Fox Agency's website: www.songfile.com. All the necessary instructions and info are given there.

Don (M),

Looking into the "mechanical licensing" at HFA - it appears that the minimum itms that can be licensed is 500 (2500 max). is there any other provision with a smaller quantity? While 500 pcs would be ok for someone that plans on selling that many cd's - I only expect to sell a miscellaneous number of cd's - if that. I've thought about marking them "demo only" and just giving a small quantity away but what would you recommend?

I have decided to delete my response, since it was incomplete and could be misinterpreted.

Thanks for your comments Don,

I'm all for paying the artist for his work. I am not a full time musician and my name is not well known - and if I were to sell a cd of covers it would probably be only 2 or 3 at the most. I looked up one song at the HFA and the license fee was something like $52. Well, a cd with 10 to 14 songs on it is going to be well beyond my ability to pay on a gamble that I would ever sell more than 10 cd's - let alone 500. I'm sure that the Harry Fox Agency gets their cut long before the artist(s) gets theirs.

Others feel free to chime in here.

Thanks,

vc

I haven't read the rules and regulations yet, but I wonder if the CD's were given away as in not for sale, but to tell the audience member that donations are accepted. I wonder if that would be like a loop hole to get around the situation?
