Are built-in smartmedia cards to takeover

We have both Genesys and Triton Studio with CD burners.
We have Techics,Yamaha and Roland with smartmedia cards.
I want a keyboard for the future and I want an all-in-one machine to record on to a media.
Does anyone see smartmedia as the new substitute for CD?

I don`t think at the present time "media-cards" will replace CD burners.
Right now the max capacity ,(I think) is around 512K with 256K being the norm.
However as compression gets "smarter" there is a very real possiblility that that could happen.

I see larger hard drive being utilized in the future . How many smart media cards to you need to equal 10 gigs ? Hard drive's make sense IMHO .

I think the largest cards are now 1 GB.......and there's talk of them being for sale in general music shops ....just like Cds or tapes with music of whatever genre....because they're so much more economical than CDs...maybe in a couple of years?..................cheers,BKK Keys.....

Substitute for CD? I dunno about that yet, but I do think that smart media (or equivilent type) cards are going to eventually REPLACE the hard drive as the mass storage device of choice for arranger keyboards. The advantage of a card is 'NO MOVING PARTS' and it also provides quicker access to data, and if I'm not mistaken, even faster than a hard drive affords.

Bangkokeys is right that 1 GB cards are already begining to hit the market now, and 1 GB is certainly more than enough needed to store music data for arranger keyboard type files I'd think. If more room is needed, just buy another card. The card data can also be easily backed up to your PC computer and subsequently a CD or DVD as well.

Yes, hard drives offer larger storage capacity (40 gig) initially, but the trade off is that they don't provide the flexiblity (exchanging data with friends) , convenience (tiny postage stamp sized) or portabibility (hard drives are delicate you need to exercise a LOT more care when moving your KB) as the tiny cards are.

OK, after all that enthusiasm, I'm still buying a Yamaha Tyros (and adding a Hard Drive) and not a Technics KN7000 (which includes a Compact SD Flash Card), so go figure,

You're gonna miss that all-in-one package the first day you do a double or triple.
There is NO substitute for on board speakers in the smaller settings, None.

I sure hope you have a return policy on that Tyros ..... you're gonna get tired of lugging amps around to small parties that don't require them !

If you are adding extra bulk by having external on speakers, why not just lug and extra keyboard around that adds another dimension that way? maybe a dedicated 76 or 88 note piano will be a good addition to your larger setup, and the smaller ones just use the psr alone.

Ahh, who knows .... who cares ...... it's just alot of words for the same old story.

SmartMedia card isn't really smart.... the max is far less then that of Compact Flash cards...

Soon CF cards of 3GB capacity will be available.

WAIT ! I NEVER said I was getting rid of the 2000 . . . No WAY ! I STILL plan to utilize the PSR2000 for those shorter program, smaller setting, multiple gigs/day venues.




I'm not stupid. My dealer's given me a 30 day RISK FREE return policy which includes a 100% refund if (for ANY reason) the Tyros doesn't work out for me.



The weight of the Tyros speakers is only 12 lbs, so the weight of the ENTIRE Tyros package (including speakers) is actually LESS than many of the other top end arrangers which INCLUDE the 'built in' speakers. Ok, so big deal, the setup/breakdown time might add another 3-5 minutes, but for the larger venue gigs, I think it's worth the minor setup hassle to gain the many added features and improved sound, the Tyros offers.

I think I've really done my homework: assessing all MY keyboard needs, researching & comparing features, as well as auditioning (playing at length) all the other arranger KB contenders in person, and the Tyros comes out on top. Ok, though I'm very confident that the Tyros will work out perfectly for me, I still realize that only by taking it out for a 'real life' test drive, will I know if it's REALLY RIGHT for me or not. This is where that 30 day refund & return policy comes in.



You got THAT Right. I haven't had a NEW keyboard toy is Sooooooo long now (a year), so I deserve this.

I'm not a fan of Smart Media cards, and I've
read reports that they will be phased out sooner than CF, and as someone already stated here, do not come in as large capacities as CompactFlash(CF).
Fuji/Olympus digital cameras now have models using this new media called "xD" which is the size of a postage stamp, and will (soon?) be available up to 8GB! The reason
their casing is as large as a postage stamp is so we humans can hold and not lose them.
The 32MB or 64MB xD cards are already in the
stores and are competitively priced with
CF and others.
I think synth manufacturers should seriously
consider this new format. When the prices for a 8GB xD fall low enough, xD could even replace videotape in camcorders. Mindblowing!
