Very frustrating problem

I'm using a 16MB SmartMedia card with my PSR-3000. I just purchased a 6-in-1 USB card reader in order to add files to the card through my computer. When I tried reading the files on the PSR, I repeatedly get a "Disk Error" and it cannot read the files. In addition, when copying files to and from the card through my computer, I often get stuck with an error message about a cyclic redundancy error. Now what?

Try formatting the card to FAT32

Just how do I go about doing that?

Okay I tried doing it using the Computer Management program in Windows XP but it says that my media size (16 MB) is too small for FAT 32. Now I'm thinking to just buy a USB flash drive to connect directly to the PSR-3000. Can anyone recommend particular models that are known to work?

Format it in the keyboard. That will work...and it is the simplest way. Here's how: Function key>tab to media>select "CARD">format.

If you have to format it on your computer (and I can't imagine why), many of us here can show you how to do that.

Err....now both the keyboard and computer are saying that the card is write-protected....but it is not!

Can anyone recommend good thumb flash drives for the PSR-3000?

Hi Marc,
have you got it plugged into the card reader via the psr usb port, or in the psr card slot?
I'm using a 16 mb smart media card via my card reader/usb port.
If you have any other type of card on hand either sd, smart media or whatever happens to fit in your card reader , give one of those a try.

As I mentioned in another post, I have 4 different types of media cards running simultaneously via my card reader plugged int the usb port at the back of my psr1500.

p.s. i actually had a 128mb flash stick working well for a number of months, all of a sudden one day it stopped working in the psr, ( kept getting a need to format error message, but every time I tried to format , nothing happened) Stick still works perfectly in my still works via my pc though.

A 16MB Smart Media Card is not very big. They recommend you use a 128MB. If you put too much stuff on the 16MB Card, the PSR3000 cannot read it if it's over the limit.

I had that problem when trying to load a folder with about 200 styles. I had to take the folder in my computer and make two or three folders and transfered half or a third of the styles into each folder. When I put it back in the PSR3000, it accepted the file...no problem.

When you purchase the Smart Media Card, put it into your KB slot and just leave it there to accept what you want to store there. I think just storing your best styles there is sufficient.

All the Flash Drives and Thumb Drives work fine and are much more reliable and safer. If you get a couple 1 Gig Flash Drives, use one for storage of everything you have, and save everything on the spare Flash Drive. Update, as necessary. A 2 Gig or 4 Gig Flash Drive, or even larger will work fine too.

You can make a Folder entitled "Smart Media Card" and save everything from your Smart Media Card into the Flash Drive folder you created. Since you need to remove the Smart Media Card from your KB only to copy it in your computer, it should not fail to work, because it's not handled enough to cause any problems.

BTW, there was no need to Format anything that I use in my PSR3000.

Thanks for all the help guys. This community (and www.psrtutorial.com!) is a wonderful resource. At this point I have figured out that what probably happened is that my new card reader ruined my 16 MB SmartMedia card (probably a voltage issue). Luckily all files were backed up. For now I have been using a 32 MB SD card that came with a digital camera to transfer styles to the 3000; in addition I have ordered a 128 MB SmartMedia card to stay in the 3000, as well as a 256 MB flash USB drive. When those arrive I should be all set. I have already found many of the Tyros styles to be of good use to me for many of the songs in my repertoire.

I always format any portable media to be used with the PSR3000 using the keyboard. You wouldn't have thought this would make any difference but members of this forum have had difficulties with media formatted on PC's as FAT16 or FAT32.

Incidentally the "200" (approx) files per directory limit is due to the way Yamaha handle the file system using the keyboard display and applies to any media you use with the keyboard, no matter what the capacity, including external hard discs or CD drives.
