OT: DSL service ... - 12/28/05 09:31 AM

I am looking to come out of the dark ages and change my 'dial-up' to a DSL connection for my home PC ... Now, remember, I'm cheap and don't want to spend a lot of money ...
I checked into at&t (my current service provider) and verizon (you know, all the $14.95/mo adds) and NEITHER has DSL in my area ... Any of you have experience with 'earthlink' ... they might be my only choice (other than cable at their rip-off prices!!!) ...
thnx,
t.

Tony,
I have been using earthlink every since they came to San Jose and bought Netcom that I have used since they started up in San jose 20 years ago. Never a problem.
I am currently getting DSL for 21.95 a month for 24/7 at 1MBPS and no complaints. They furnised the modem also for free.
I am just about to add a home network for another 7.95 a month as we have two desktops and two laptops and then can log in on any or all at once from wherever they are within range.
Best to you,

I have Earthlink DSL and am very satisfied. I don't know the cost, as it is bundled through my phone company(Sprint),and I am sure Florida rates are different.

Tony,

No Verizon DSL in my area as well--just rip-off cable when it works, which is another part of the problem.

Tony:

I think you could be out of luck using Earthlink as a high speed provider. In many cases no matter who your DSL provider is the so called last mile of cable is owned by Verizon. Even though you're paying Earthlink they are using Verizon wiring to your home.
You're up against the same problem I had with high speed internet service and that's location. I think you may have mentioned
aproximately where you're located in EG.

Problem is you're too far away from the CO (central office of Verizon). The CO is located in town just off Main St. I was in the same situation where I live, just a little too far away from the CO. Verizon is promoting like crazy in some cases even where a customer is located near the CO there is a waiting list to sign up.

I bit the bullet and went with Cox Cable I have phone, internet and TV with them. They offered a bundling discount, yea it's a bit pricey but I need high speed access since my job is computer related. Hope that helps.

Re: OT: DSL service ... - 12/28/05 11:55 AM

Well, after doing some searching, I find that Steve is right ... about the only thing available is COX cable or earthlink sat ... I don't like the fact that I have NO CHOICE but to use COX for cable tv, and now I will have to use them for the I'net as well ... ....

Just take a look at how much money people waste on a daily basis on cigarettes, lottery, going out to eat & drink,, etc etc etc, & every over priced thing in our lives........
high speed internet is now part of everyday life now....living will get more expensive day by day for sure and then some...its all in personal priorities, what you can do with or do without is a balancing act that you have to juggle and be happy with.....you cant take it with you....
Life is way TOO short to Dilly Dalley!
.....And not enjoy the trip!

Check out DirectTV or Dish Network. They both offer high-speed internet. Not sure about the price.

I just switched to all in one cable, phone and internet costs about the same as when I was buying them separately except now I have high speed internet and more cable channels, and free long distance 24/7.

Re: OT: DSL service ... - 12/28/05 05:30 PM

I've had Earthlink (Sprint) 512K DSL for a few years. Last month I changed all my telephone services to sprint and now have 5 MEG DSL for the same price I was paying for the 512K....................Go figure!!

I love it!! My neighbor has Comcast cable internet but I like my DSL better. She seems to have download speeds that vary drastically. My DSL seems to have download speeds at the same fast rate all the time. I'm very pleased. -charley

I have DSL with Cavalier, my daughter has Comcast...we are under the same roof..

Most of the time Comcast cable seems faster[by the numbers anyway], but not always, it seems to change with a busy load on cable..
My DSL is pretty consistent...Speed difference is hardly noticeable..

Forgot to mention, Her cable internet was down 5 out of the last 30 days....I find her on my computer more times than not..

I was a Comcast customer but made the change to DSL....I won't go back to cable...DSL works in this house..

Re: OT: DSL service ... - 12/29/05 07:29 AM

I have Verizon DSL. Tell you the truth it's all a big buisness crock if you ask me.
In my location Verizon and Charter Cable have totally monopolized the entire area. They have set up so many loop holes and so much red tape that it makes it 10 times as hard for other companies to move in and compete.

I cannot believe the price for Charter cable in my area. You think they'd drop their prices to compete with Direct TV and others.

My wife and I have the Verizon Freedom package and the DSL package together. Our bill for the two is over $100 a month.

As long as "greed" is in the picture the prices will always be jacked and we'll always get screwed in the end

zuki ... I may be for a while yet ... it looks like the hi-speed access is VERY limited in my area: COX cable which I don't like, and earthlink satellite which is quite pricey ...

I have the all in one package $124.95
I think if you go to the home you do a search and see if it is available in your area.
