As a performer Drinking on a gig is a big NO No around here and frowned upon by banquet, bar and club owners, etc ..
I think its a good rule for sure....Drinking & playing is as bad as Drinking & driving or smoking on stage.....how do you people feel about it?

I guess some of the Americans don't appreciate the British sense of humour or possibly don't understand it? Don't you realise when we are having a laugh with you?
If you read my post you'll see the at the end of it.

I was actually taking the p in a polite manner out of an intro being 32 bars long and using the going to a bar for a drink as a PUN.

There is no way when I go out playing that I mix drink with my work, plus drinking and driving is illegal anyway. I only drink cola when out on a booking and that's when I get a break. I save getting sozzled when I have a night off. Hope that's rectified my post above if anyone got the wrong impression.

It's not gone off topic because there's little news on the E80 anywhere at the moment. I think DNJ misinterpreted my posting above that's all and then it went off course onto if we should have a drink whilst playing or not.
Maybe a new thread titled 'Does anyone have the need for a drink whilst they perform?' could be started by DNJ?

T42, I understand your point......its just a sore spot....so many of these so called DJ's & Bands have ruined the business for us by drinking, smoking pot , etc etc & acting wildly on gigs leaving a bad taste in owners mouths, & even in some instances resulting in injury, structural damage, & even rioting at an affair.
What the heck is going on out there ?

To answer your threads title, I don't have the need to drink whilst I perform, I get all of my energy from playing live and get a buzz from seeing my audience enjoy themselves. You don't need any from of stimulation other than this, plus if I had a drink I'd be running to the loo every half hour for a p. In one end and out of the other with me lol

I don't drink on the job. I was lucky to learn early on (from older musicians who had to learn the hard way), that drinking on the job in this business will ruin your career quickly. Because alcohol is usually free & abundant all night long, I decided to just say no, and glad I did. I've learned to get & feel high naturally. Over the course of an evening, patron's are frequently buying me drinks, so I always make pre-arrangements with the bar to have the bartender mix mine without the alcohol. Sorry....I should of known Scott would have this thread topic on file in his data base but as you know there are many more SZ members here since 2004's thread who could maybe add to it with their opinions which I'm sure have changed with new laws being passed every day out there regarding drinking thru the last few years.... I for one see a big drop off in bar patrons due to the new strict STATE Non Smoking Anywhere on premises.....with a Hugh decline in business which trickles down to patrons who are in your audience to enjoy your music. It all intertwines somehow, so "Old News" can be "New News" for many

Donny I have seen no drop off because of the no smoking band...They have learned to accept it...as we had to endure the smoke reak for so many years...It is the best thing to happen in my playing world..

PA better hurry up with the No Smoking ordinance soon......or I will only play the nursing homes in this state...

I always made it a policy to never drink when I work. I can't wait until Jan.1 when Louisiana starts the No Smoking law.

Fran most blood & guts saloons are dead a round here I've talked to many bartenders who have took a big hit in income from missing their regulars .....these people are drinker & smokers....you take that away and you make them look for other places to enjoy their vices....New Jersey is tough on this law & just wait till it gets brutally cold where they cant even go out back & smoke ....not sure about your state in PA?

Don they say Jan 1st for PA too..I have my fingers crossed..

Don.....eventually ALL STATES will be NO SMOKING ANYWHERE......its good for some & bad for others.

Donny I enjoyed the ban in NJ during the cold weather..They just went outside[25 feet from the entrance] and smoked....quickly I might add....This was at Alpe's in Wildwood, NJ...

The night the band started ..the patrons ten minutes before the ban[midnight] lined cigs in there mouth 3 or 4 at a time...lit up and smoked up the place ...unbelievable...what a wreak....They are use to it now...and actually a lot of others come in now because of the ban....works both ways..

Years ago I remember doing shows where I couldn't even SEE the audience, the smoke was so thick....all I could see was the colored stage flood lights thru a mist & fog!!!plus my gear would gum up after a while too YUK!!!

Donny it gives our friends and love ones another reason to kick the habit...it has no redeeming qualities...And they [and us] will live longer...

I just hope the youth here in the US would get smarter, and not light up that first weed....and the vast majority are the girls...what a shame...

It has nothing to do with peer pressure...but they justify it to themselves..."keeps me calm"...."keeps me from eating" etc..


What they should think is.."it keeps a nice guy from wanting to be around me"...

Funny people worry about smoking in bars ....meanwhile the're all sitting around drinking

California's law of NO SMOKING in ALL Public Places (not just bars & restaurants) has been in effect for 12 years already. We take pride as leading the rest of the Country on environmental health issues. Luckily, I only had to endure 3 years of performing & singing in smoke filled bars. I can't imagine having to endure that again.

Hey zuki....I enjoy many of the efforts of the SZ members......why not put some of your music up.....I need a drink too

My favorite drinks are cold milk, cold water, green tea and juice.
Isn't it odd that someone who can down gallons of beer can barely finish a tiny glass of water?
As for those drunks who think they can drive...well, I hope they drive straight into a wall or tree. It might save someone's life.

ZUJKI have you tried the T2 yet?
What dont you like about the offerings out there now?

Yep, tried the T2 on several occasions at Sam Ash. Prefer speakers, 76 keys, Roland styles and not all the features conducive for live play - home only. What I do like about Yamaha is their piano/stings layering - unparalleled. Roland needs to take a lesson on that.
