Hi Bruce,
Michael's got a program, haven't tried it, but I'm not sure if it will fix the problem of incorrect drum notes ie some of the xg drums ( the ones outside the gm scope) play incorrectly. http://www.svpworld.com/util_midifix.htm

best wishes

MidiPlayer will convert the drum tracks and the voices to the GM standard.

Just select a GM sound card as your instrument. You can process single files or do many at once with the PlayList/Batch mode.

MidiPlayer is available at: http://www.svpworld.com/util_midiplayer.htm

Hi Michael,
your program does actually convert those wrong drum notes you sometimes get when playing an xg drum track on a gm drum source ? I knew it fixed the tracks problem, just wasn't sure about the notes themselves?

Rikki:

The only drum notes it reassigns are the bongos etc from the Latin kit.

If you can tell me what the notes are, I will included it in the program.

Re: Convert XG to GM - 01/18/05 01:22 PM

Hi Michael,
great, I'll try and work them out. I've had problems with some of the xg brush sounds, the one's below the bass drums.
Normally I transpose them manually.

I've got a complete list of xg drum maps & gm maps, so when I get a chance I'll go thru them and sort them out properly.

That would be great.
Thank You
Michael

Michael & Rikki once you get this all worked out I would be very interested to receive the fruits of your labour. It would be nice to have a software program that quickly converts XG to GM format (voices, drums and tracks). I can hardly wait!!!

Hi Michael,
I've worked off note no's. Some of the xg drums don't exist in the gm standard so I've substituted best as I can. The one's with * are substitutions.
There's a real problem with note's 25 to 28. There are no brushes in the standard gm drum kit , only in the gm brush kit. Not sure how to get around that problem. It's one of the reasons I used to transpose my drums manually when I used to convert from xg to my technics. Technics also allowed you to have 2 drum tracks( same as psr's) but unfortunately gm doesn't.

I'm going to do a drum conversion table for OMB, and I'm hoping one way around it will be to do 2 of them. Simple case of try the drum track with both conversions and see which one sounds correct.
Anyway, hope you can make sense of the following

XG GM
Note Note No.
13 = 86 (C#-1 = D5 )
14 = 87
15 = 27
16 = 28
17 = 29
18 = 30
19 = 33*
20 = 32
21 = 33
22 = 34
23 = 76*
24 = 75*
25 = 38 Brush Set
26 = 40 Brush Set
27 = 39 Brush Set
28 = 40 Brush Set
29 = 40 Snare Roll which Doesn't exist gm*
30 = 85
31 = 40*
32 = 31
33 = 35*
34 = 37*

I have a feeling the xg brush set to the Gm brush set need fixing too. Not sure if that's part of your program though??

Rikki:

Thank you for the list. Is was a lot of work.

Everyone complains about the brush reproduction. If the midi specified patch change 41 (Brush) but the kit is not installed on the sound source, you will get the hand claps.If I just eliminate these events then the problem is worse.

Michael

Hi Michael,
I tend to forget that all gm sound sources don't all have the brush kit.

Getting a Handclap instead of a brush slap, or a snare drum instead of brush swirl isn't ideal.

Might play around a bit ,and see if maybe one of the other instruments in the gm kit may be a better substitute for those brush sounds than the default handclaps & snare drums.

I'll get back to you.

Re: Convert XG to GM - 01/19/05 10:52 PM

Hi Michael,
I replaced xg brushes with
XG GM
25 =82
26 =69
27 =82
28 =69
Not great, but sounds better than handclaps & snare drums.
I tested it with my inbuilt wave table
on a couple of styles. Worked ok. Also tried it in dgx again didn't sound great , but still useable.
One of the styles I tried it with was 9000pro midnight waltz. A couple of the variations consisted of basically ,bass drum, brush swirl & brush tap.

best wishes
Rikki
