Voiceworks Harmonizer & latest cd - 04/06/03 06:29 AM

Hi,

For anyone interested in what the new TC Helicon Voiceworks harmonizer sounds like, my latest cd "Time To Time" is on my site and has a lot of samples. For my taste, Cuts 10, 11, 12 are the best and show the Voiceworks off the best as well, although some of the others do it justice too.

If you go thanks for the visit and feedback appreciated.

Though I hate to admit this, you were right about the vocal quality of the TC--it sounds terrific. I would, however, bring the vocal up front a bit more in the song, but not much more. Overall, you've got another winner.

Keep On Jammin'

Gary,
Thanks for the listen.....I too think that it's the first harmonizer I've heard that sounds like real people singing, instead of Donald Duck sitting in.

Hi trt,
I generally like your stuff but, as Gary says, the vocals are way too cloudy and need to be brought forward. Sorry, but vocal pitching seems to be a problem, too and I'm not overly impressed by the harmonizer; it doesn't sound as good as a Korg ih used in conjunction with a Korg i-series board.

Big Red,
I'm sure there is signal loss in streaming audio through the internet, and that may be why the vocals may seem less than stellar to some. However, I've owned every major brand harmonizer since they became affordable (I passed on the original Eventide in the 70's for a couple of grand, thank you very much!)and I can state for the record that the Korg iH remains somewhere in the middle of the pack. It was not the worst of the bunch, but even early Digitech units had a more natural sound. The newest models, including the entire TC lineup are so much better in terms of natural sound, clarity and vocal tracking.

I'm sure you have a comfort factor with your own setup, and the iH gives you what you want, but I suggest that you audition a newer model for yourself ..... NOT an internet demo - try the REAL thing. It makes a difference. I have an older TC model than Terry does, and I think mine sounds better than what I heard in the demos. It's all based on opinion, pc speakers, bandwith, khz quality etc ..... it's not fair to judge a piece of gear unless you try it your self.

With my voice, my mic and my speakers ...... I'll stack up the gear I use to anything I've heard on the net to date. I especially was dissapointed with the Roland Discovery5 demo. I thought the vocals were horrible, but again, that's due to many variables. I'd love to hear it in person, but till I do ..... I'm unimpressed.

Go try the new TC stuff, or the latest DigitechVR ...... There really IS a difference over the technology that was in place when the iH was made. Give a listen.

Red,
Thanks for the listen and Dave is correct in the go listen live department. The net including my site is only a sort of example, due to all the net pitfalls...compression to an mp3, my setup, your setup etc.

I tried the Discovery 5 in person UD and I don't think it compares to any of the top end stand alone stuff ( TC in particular ) .

Thanks UD. There is no substitute for the 'real thing' of course but, as always when something is posted on the net, it's all you have to go on and you state your opinion on what you hear. You can't do otherwise, can you?

trt: That's the catch 22 of the situation, I guess - getting your stuff out to as wide an audience as possible versus the quality of output obtainable. While I don't doubt the quality of your gear, or your skill in using it, in real terms the 'net version' doesn't do it any favours.

I'm not sure I understand you here. What are the "real terms" and what is the "net version" please?

If I am interpreting it correctly I think what Big Red is saying here is.....

"Terry, I listened to the tune/harmonizer samples and I think they suck in this mp3 version, perhaps in the real version as well."

Of course I don't hear it that way but, to each his own and the risk we all take in posting our work.

It's AMAZING how the written word can be (mis)interpreted depending on our own bias, mood, etc.
trtjazz.... If I may be so bold as to offer MY interpretation:
"...in real terms, the 'net version' doesn't do it any favours..." = "the bottom line is the internet version, because of its lack of quality, is not doing you justice" ...
I choose not to think that Big Red was saying your stuff sucks, MP3 or live !!!

Thank you Tony Mads - that's exactly what I was intending. I had said in my original post in this thread that I generally liked trt's stuff but, again, the sound I'm hearing from my computer is just not up to it.
For the record, my computer is a stock 1.2 gig, 40 meg Hewlett-Packard with a cable modem and the speakers are Yamaha YST-MS201 with a sub-woofer.

I really don't care to start a beef over this...I did not read Gary's post as saying anything about cloudiness. He also said he thought the harmonizer sounded "terrific". So my interpretation of your words here I think are loose but accurate. And that's ok, your entitled to not like it, or the way it sounded.

To me it's the best sounding harmonizer I've ever heard including Korg's....just differring opinons on sound again is all. The cd version of course sounds better and that's what I do the mix for....the paying customer.

Gotcha ya. I didn't think it was an insult, but I wasn't quite sure where you were headed.
My largest level of success with using harmonizers has been to get the correct balance. Even the TC needs to be balanced correctly with the lead or else it sounds odd. I can't imagine working without one anymore ...... it's opened up my sound so much. Mills Brothers, Beach Boys, Andrews Sisters ....... they're all mine now !
