My favorite is Acid Pro 3 and 4..easy to use and records quality[depends on your sound card]..

Power tracks is still the best value for the dollar...it does just about everything you can do with Cakewalk..

I have been using MidiNotate for three years. http://www.notation.com/
The reason is simplicity and lower cost than Cubase, Encore etc., and it has very accurate interpretation of Midi files in full page layout.I am not familiat enough with their full editing program to comment.

I use Powertrax Pro sometimes. Thwere is no question of the bang for the buck, but, I don't like their leadsheet notation nearly as well as MidiNotate. The forum and the developer are also great in answering "how to " questions.

My nr1 sound-editing program is SoundForge. I call it the Adobe Photoshop of the Sound Editors. Very easy to use, but if you want to do more everything is there to support that. I'm using the program for years now.

Re: A Poll On Music Programs Used By Members - 12/02/05 03:21 PM

Tony,

I have many apps and softsynths / effects in my computers.

My favs:

Multipurpose DAW with midi editing: Cakewalk Sonar - very powerful editing features, fairly straightforward to use. Cubase is probably just as good, but I'm used to Cakewalk's way of doing things.

Midi sequencer / pattern sequencer: FL Studio. Excellent for creating / stringing patterns together- Interface allows for smooth workflow vs apps like Orion and Project V.

Audio editing: Cool Edit Pro - All I need to make almost any audio file shine. Intuitive with rock solid stability.

Favorite softsynth- Analog emulation: Pro53 - Think Prophet 5. Very close in sounds. Very stable.

Favorite softsynth- GM sounds: Plugsound GM module

Favorite softsynth- ambient /experimental- Absynth - Think Roland V synth, but with more useable sounds.

Favorite modeling synth- realistic sounds B4 Organ.

Favorite Effect: Amplitube simulated guitar amp

I use Band-in-a-Box and PowerTracks. They are the first programs I was introduced to and I've never tried any other. They were inexpensive and easy to use. I've kept up with the updates over the years and I've never taken the time to master either - only do what I have to do and never really explored further.
Ciao,

I started with cakewalk when they started and updated for the 100.00 every year until I got to Deluxe Pro Audio V 9 and stopped there. It does it all for me and I don't need any further upgrades.
I have other programs too but cakewalk is my main axe.

Hi Tony,

First, let me say how much I've enjoyed your song posts. You've done some really good stuff.

For recording, I have a Roland VS 2480 which I just love. I've recorded several live concerts with my praise band. These are 16 track recordings of 2 hour concerts. Once you learn the maching, the editing is awesome. I've just completed a solo piano CD using the Roland and Neumann mics with a Yamaha C 3 and also a C 7 piano. When I need more than that, I have access to Sheffield Studios which has Pro Tools and every piece of outboard gear known to man. For quick charts, sequences, ect., Band in the Box and Powertracks are hard to beat. When I need a serious score I use Finale Allegro. Those programs pretty much take care of my needs.

Salud,

Joe

Acid Pro 4.0 for recording, interfaced with Sound Forge 6.0 for editing. Very easy to work with, user friendly, all the best features and excellent results.

Good Luck,

Gary

For midi I use Sonar (I started with Cakewalk 2.0)
For audio I use cooledit pro.
(started with cooledit96)

One of the reasons you might choose for Sonar could be that there are lots of instrument patches with all midi definitions in it.
Saves a lot of time. ( It's a lot of work to write your own..)

When I started with cooledit pro I was on Cakewalk Pro audio 8.0.
Somehow I never got used to the audio capablilites of CPA(very limited) or Sonar (better but still limited), Cooledit pro has everything you need with very limited processor use, so that leaves you with a lot of extra tracks without latency.

Likewise, I use Adobe audition v1.5, which used to be called cool edit pro. (Adobe bought them out a couple of years back.)

It does everything I need (I don't work with midi as I don't understand it.....way beyond me!)

It can mixdown, burn to cd and convert to mp3 so I am more than happy with it.

best wishes
Tony

Re: A Poll On Music Programs Used By Members - 12/03/05 04:18 PM

Hi Tony,

I've never done heavy work with music software sequences, but I've had a dab with quite a lot, and done small projects with a few.

The programs I loved using the most, and found most intuitive, appealing and inspiring were all the cheapest ones (or free!)

Mackie Tracktion (I got a free copy which they gave out a year ago)
Fruity Loops (about 50-150 GBP depending which version)
ComputerMuzys (free with every computer shopper magazine but a admittedly fairly limited)

People will say these are more like toys, but I found myself more productive with these than with Sonar and Cubase (which I really forced myself to learn on a Mac - brought a FastGuide book etc - but never liked it). Depends what kind of music you're making obviously.

Audacity of course is a great audio program everyone uses all the time and is free.

No, but a new ver of Band-In-A-Box just came out which now has VST support, so the next ver of PT should have it.

Help me out Fran,
I've got PtPA10, but can't make it play my Dimension Pro Dxi. Yes I can select it, but it does not play. Been to Pt Forum at PG Music, and it seems that this is still the case, but for next edition maybe.

I use:

Cubase SX - highly recommended
Quantum FX - highly recommended
Kontakt - good program; less practical than I thought
Sountrack Pro - strongly not recommended
