Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/17/06 03:16 PM

Here's another post that is not a rumor--I'm not about to replace my PSR-3000 unless something really, really, really fantastic comes out at the same price. Ain't gonna' happen!

Cheers,

Gary

GARY !!!
T2-4-U! (not to be confused with T-4-2)

Get the T2 and you will be T2K (T2Keyboard) compliant!

Sorry, I had to do it. Its my medication for a rough week (so far) at the office.

That's almost a relief because after today's purchase, that totally takes me out of the race for a new board.. that is unless of course Don M is correct about the features on the new Ketron offering.

True... I manage a music store in Phoenix, Arizona and also use a PSR-3000 and a PSR-550. They're both fantastic boards.

Anyone needing anything of a msical nature is welcome to contact me. I can ship anywhere and will beat anyone's prices.

Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/17/06 06:22 PM

Hmm, that's disappointing.

I love my PSR3000, but I wanted to get my hands on a new toy.

At least I will save about $800 - the approximate price to replace my two PSR3000s with two new PSRs.

Another thing though is that I am wondering if my PSR3000 can handle another year without breaking. So far this keyboard has been holding up - for a year and a half already. Only one malfunction that was easily fixed by an amateur electrician.

I hope that the replacement at least comes out in the late fall - like the Tyros 2 did this year.

Oh well.

"I can't justify the expense just for some new voices, and, basically the same styles" Quote Ian.

Hey Ian, guess you haven't had a chance to try the Tyros 2 yet? When will you get the demo? I am looking forward to your review and comparison.

Just sold my Tyros and PSR3000 to recirculate my music mad money. It was the best move I could have made. The styles are better as well as the voices by a long shot, plus the most important thing: tone. IMHO there is a major difference in tone between the PSR3000 to the Tyros to the Tyros 2.

I know some disagree. Many are in agreement with me on this though, but refrain from voicing their opinion on SZ and express their viewpoint to me privately.

I make mention of this because apparently not everyone judges in the same way or for the same reasons.

The only reason I make mention of this is because there are a lot of people that buy their keyboard by what is said here without even trying or comparing them.

So I state MHO for them that the PSR3000 and the Tyros 1 most definitely DO NOT sound identical. And that there is a major improvement between the Tyros 1 and the Tyros 2.

Don't get me wrong. They are all very fine instruments. But for someone trying to decide which one to get, there are truly enough differences between them to check them out closely before purchasing through the same speakers and not to rely on others opinions.

Hope this helps a few more people make the best purchase on their next keyboard.

Best

i have to agree scott, just by listening to the demos of the 3000, against the T2 there is clearly a substantial(read HUGE!!!) improvement in the T2, just mho of course..

Ian, thanx for nice report........I'd love to hear some of your work on the 3k if you would share it with us? Btw what type of venues are you performing at in Canada?

Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/18/06 07:48 AM

Thanks for the interest Dnj.
I work locally(in Nova Scotia)doing dinner music and background music for conventions and similar venues.Unfortunately I do not have any recordings of my stuff except for some Midi files that I plan to put on a CD.They're mostly okay, except they may need some remixing before burning. I notice that most if not all uploads to this site are done in some sort of audio format.
My next investment is a HD recorder/CD burner;my laptop is not powerful enough, and doesn't have the right inputs to be utilized.
I do all my recording in Quick Record and use no overdubs,as I want to be able to reproduce everything "live" that I've recorded.
I rely heavily on my own custom styles to do the work,so to speak, and I'm usually not concerned if my recordings are exactly like the original...although I make sure the melody is accurate and the tune is identifiable.
I play very simply, probably influenced from being a demonstrator and having to make it look easy,Maybe I'm doing something right,as I am usually kept pretty busy.
If you have a Tyros/3k I would gladly send you a few midis by private e-mail.

Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/18/06 08:49 AM

Lots of good points have been mentioned here now for my 2 cents.
I play a PSR 3000, my gigs are primarily background at cocktail hours and private parties. Although, I'm satisfied with the 3000 but as a pianist like myself, I don't care for the toy like action of the 3000. I haven't played a T2, but recently had a chance to demo a T1, the action is much better than that of the 3000, in my opinion. Although, I'd like to buy a T2, I can't justify the extra dollars, and I don't believe I'll get an extra business, by just playing a T2.

Ian .....please email me some tunes Im sure if they are GM I can hear them on my gear..I have since sold my 3k's and have switched to the Ketron MidJay which I love to perform with. I'd like to hear more about your custom styles also and how they are produced? Do you play mostly the tourist trade also?

Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/18/06 09:45 AM

Pacesetter, I run with a 3k. When the T2 was released I was able to play the T1 and T2 (briefly) virtually side by side. The T2 action is much more substantial than the T1, which I felt was very light and not very impressive, even though the 3k action is (as we know) not very good at all.

On a comparative view, when I got the 3k I didn't think I could justify the extra expense and get a T1; I didn't think the extra cash gave me a huge difference in capability and I wasn't that stunned by the keyboard action. The T2 is a different matter, it is audibly significantly better than the 3k, the keyboard action feels "right" and should I now have to replace the 3k I would seriously consider the T2 even though it seriously more expensive!

Bummer. I was thinking that I would buy a PSR3100 in the late summer. Oh well. More time to save my pennies.

Re: PSR-3000 replacement update. - 01/18/06 11:51 AM

Hi Ian

No question about it. If I wanted to, I could easily play out with the PSR3000. Especially if I were using the combo sound. Although all of it is really quite good.

As I played the 3000 I got used to the keys. The built in speakers are nice mainly so I could play it at home without lugging my speakers upstairs, allowing me to leave them in the car trunk.

As far as testing keyboards, for me I've found it safest to use the speakers that I play out with. I found through headphones the PSR3000 and the Tyros sounded identical in so many ways, and yet when put through speakers it didn't work out that way. So for me my speakers is the way to try them. I tried the T2 both ways and found that the headphones gave me an unrealistic idea of how I would sound live. But a lot can be learned using both for comparison.

As far as the sound, I'm sure I lean heavily towards the fullest sounding keyboard that most closely resembles the very high ticket Lowrey home organs that I worked with for years. I'm sure this also influences my taste in speakers. I guess it's all what you get used to, makes sense to have and what will fit the budget.

It's just like the Logitech speakers. I suspect that people using other home systems or players that are used to using only PA's have a different idea as to what sounds good to them.

After playing many concerts on a $73,000 Lowrey it doesn't surprize me that the satellite speakers of the z5500's don't make it with me. But for $300 it's a pretty good deal for what it is.

I can tell you all that Ian does some nice recordings and is a very good style maker.

Some of his work is located in the file section here:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/yamahapsrgroup/

The things that are appealing to me about the PSR3000 especially is the size, which allows me to use a smaller and lighter case, making it much easier to move and fit in the car for me. The memory card and thumb drive certainly is a great feature.

I'm glad Ian is with us on SZ.

Best
Scott
