Time to Replace My Speakers

Time to Replace My Speakers - 11/15/05 07:09 AM

It's time to replace my old Peavey HKS12 powered speakers and want to go with a pair of powered studion monitor speakers along with a powered sub. I currently have a Roland Discover5 and Roland VK8M and expect to add the G70 or PA1x soon. I also have a good mixer.

I mostly play at home but do go out at times and play for small crowds (20-70 people). I need a full sound and I also get a bit loud at times.

Budget limit is about $1K USD. I have looked as Samson Resolv8, Roland and others but can't get a good place to compare them all.

Suggestions, opinions, guidance is welcome. Thanks!

Billh:

You describe the perfect place for a Logitech Z5500 system. Check here on synthzone for all the posts on them. Myself and many more love them, and probably delivered to your door for about $250.00 with the best guarantee out there....Pose

Check this link out: http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buyer/pr...65307&page=1000

Once there scroll down to Provantage
$197.91 plus shipping should bring you to that $250, possibly a little less depending on where you live.

Hi,

With a budget of 1K, my vote is the EV SXA-100 plus speaker. It is selling at $599 per cab but you could bargain for $1000 for two speakers at most SamAsh store. I just got a pairs. They are light weight, sound good especially the vocal. If I have the money, I would buy the bose PAS too.

My suggestion are Genelec 8050A and Dynaudio BM15A.

Bill,

I play for audiences up to 125 people with the Z-5500 system and it rocks the house. As Pose said, it's a great system, incredible sounds, fantastic company to deal with, best guarantee in the business, and you surely cannot beat the price. IMO the Z-5500 is the next best thing to the Bose PAS, and I own both.

Good Luck,

Gary

For this budget, my well-informed friend has advised me to buy the Mackie SRM-350s. I'm saving hard!

Other Synthzoners have given excellent reviews for these speakers. Search the forum.

I definitely would not use a good pair of studio monitors. They just aren't designed to handle the SPL needed for a 75-100 person room, nor are they designed to 'throw' the sound that far (hence the word 'nearfield').

The Mackies mentioned above will do just fine, or the Logitechs as a budget alternative.

Thanks to everyone for their response.

For the folks that use the Z5500, how do you setup the speakers since it appears to be a 5.1 system and our keyboards are 2 channel devices? Is there a simple 2 channel mode on the Z5500?

Thanks again for all your support.

The Z5500 sure sounds interesting and the price is great.

With the Z-5500 you have several options, including one that is merely stereo. However, when using the stereo mode the center speaker is not activated. When using the 5.1 mode, all speakers come into play, but the basic hookup is the same--stereo out of your computer, stereo into the Z-5500. It's the Z-5500s processors that create the 5.1 surround sound effect when you're using the Pro-Logic II Music effects setting. The sound a much fuller, and of course, you have the benefit on one additonal speaker. Essentially, 5.1 provides you with 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers, 1 center speaker and a 10-inch long throw sub.

As for the nearfield speakers, that's old technology. The most incredible sound system available for OMB performers today, the Bose PAS, uses tiny speakers that are nearly identical in both size and design to the Z-5500 speakers. They are anything but nearfield when it comes to projecting sound. It's no longer a technology of moving larger quantities of air--it's how the sounds are processed. There have been lots of skeptics about both the Bose PAS and Logitech Z-5500 on this and other forums. Those who actually took the time to try these systems, skeptics included, were largely amazed at what they heard--you will be as well.

Good Luck,

Gary
