DSL is FREAKIN AWSOME!!!!!

Sorry off topic. The wife and I just upgraded to DSL tonight and DAMN! HOLY CRAP what a HUGE change. I downloaded a 9.12mb mp3 in one minute and 22 seconds. On our old dial up connection that would have taken 1/2 an hour. Many I'm hyped with this DSL. Took them forever to get it in our area too. That's West Virginia for you A little behind at times

Once you go high speed you will NEVER go back. I have a T1 speed cable line upgraded from dial-up. If I had to go back i really think i would kill myself haha so lets hope I dont move to the middle of nowhere!

In October 2003 we upgraded from dial-up to what they here in Sweden call ADSL (with 0.5 Mbps download speed). It was a HUGE difference, especially since it now only cost a specific fee per month, no matter how long you were on the internet or how much you downloaded. Now we're upgrading once again, this time "only" to a faster line (2Mbps download speed). It'll be really nice to get that extra speed . I don't think I ever can go back to dial-up again.

Installing "just" 384 Kbp/s at home would set me back €50 per month. Not an option.

I just tested the speed of my cable modem bandwidth at 2.9 megabits per second. I wouldn't go back to dialup in a million years. I pay $30 a month for 6 months and then $50. It reminds me of my first microwave. Once you have one you can't live without it. I recently talked my 66 year old dad into trying it instead of dialup when my parents moved. He was VERY reluctant but I fussed until he gave it a chance. Now he raves about it and he and my mom (same age) BOTH have their own new computers and my dad installed a LAN so they both have high speed Internet. And I remember when they got their first computer.
It's worth it!

It is a revelation to me how lucky I am with my ISP.
These rates you are quoting for your respective Servers are rather high compared with what is available here in UK.
I, for instance, pay only £15 (€20,$25) per month for 1MBit (download at around980KB)with a maximum bandwidth per month of 1GB.If I use more than 1GB I pay only another £1 !
Sometime this year my ISP is giving us up to 8MB for the same price, as soon as the lines are ready!

What also amazes me from this thread is that anyone still uses dial-up (unless Broadband is not available in your area).

Hey Eddie - who are you with then mate? - You're two quid a month cheaper than mine although I aint got a restriction or pay extra for high traffic volumes.

Here in New York, I pay $99.00 per month for DSL, 24/7 ISP Support, unlimited Email accounts, Web hosting, Local and Unlimited Long Distance Telephone through a single company called Frontiernet.net.

That's not bad considering what my friends with Cable Modems pay.

Check out Cavalier DSL[Cavtel.com]...$25..I am happy with it..just as fast as Cable and half the price..

Down here in Cozumel Mexico, I pay $50.00
per month for 512 speed dpwnloading at about 100mbs and I keep my computer on 24 hrs a day
thru TelMex. with no restrictions...I have a live web-cam and a Cozumel Bulliten board with 1700 members transfering data and photos
this is the best thing since sliced bread....

Donny: Never say Never! My DSL (SBC Communications) actually IS 'faster than' cable. I've side by side comparison tested it with a Cable hookup (which I had on a free trial audition from Comcast). My DSL-Pro level service ($39) has been tested & confirmed equivilent to T1 speed, perhaps because I have a static IP (grandfathered in because one of the first DSL subscribers in my area), and because I'm located VERY CLOSE to a DSL switching station. - Scott

Scott maybe in your area on the west coast but around here North east Cable is definitly much faster then DSL by far. No dial up always online etc etc ..

Donny.....down here we have them both and cable has been nothing but problems...to much down time and not as fast as dsl...I am guessing that it all depends on your local provider....I think you are lucky you have what you have....I remember Brick Town
and I remember that the cable wasn't the best
in Ocean County back in the 70 and early 80's....

Actually, that's not entirely true...Cable modems are subject to usage contention. Meaning the more people that use the system, the more the system degrades. DSL does not have this problem since it's point to point packets to a switch.

I think kbrkr is right regarding "usage contention". I think I have heard this complaint from a few relatives who have cable internet. My DSL line is quite fast.

It's the same set up with DSL. Your phone line is never busy and you can talk on the phone while surfing the web, and you're always online. I love this set up. I'm going nuts watching how fast large files actually load up. I feel like I'm back in my old college dorm with the schools ethernet system. Boy that was fast too.

Have fun with your new DSL. We got it after I became interested in surfing the internet. I found I was wasting half my life trying to get onto sites, download, disconnecting, reconnecting, etc, etc....

Now it's a blast. I hardly ever buy any magazines or newspapers and the like anymore, heck it's all online for free.

Stuff that used to take an hour to download now takes about a minute.

We are very happy with DSL.
