Against my better judgement

Against my better judgement - 02/13/04 11:17 AM

Well due in large part to how I do my vocals and much debate about them I have changed the way I am recording them. So, hoping not to start another big debate, here's a sample of how they sound now. This is about 2 minutes out of an over 8 minute cut.

All constructive feedback welcomed.
thanks,
Terry

Terry,

The vocals sound really good. Could you share with us how you record vocals and what equipment (Mic, pre amp, sound card etc ...) used?

Thanks

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/13/04 12:00 PM

Terry, Wow, terrific clarity in both your vocals as well as the rest the mix. Your song has a distinctively native american flavor. Nice orchestration and mix as well. What (Tyros?) instrument voice (ooh . . . ooh . . .) did you utilize for the accompaniment backup to your vocals . . . cool sound. Your vocal style on this tune hauntingly reminds me a lot of Neil Young on his classic "Harvest" album. Terry, without a doubt, a huge recording quality improvement on this song. With your new found improved recording technique, I'm really excited now to hear your next song. This demonstrates just 'how much' of a impact the engineering side of recording can make on a song. Your music artistry can now be felt & easily heard (for the first time).

Ok Terry, please please share with us your recording process on this song, and just how it differs from your previous works.

- Scott

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/13/04 12:39 PM

Shaz & Scott,
Thanks guys for the feedback and glad you liked.

Shaz,
The vocals are recorded into my Tascam SX1LE after going through a patch that I made up on my TC Helicon Voiceworks. What I did was to create a new patch toned down from what I was doing before.

I use and AKG 1000 condenser mic. I aslso added a touch of TC Reverb.

Scott,
Thanks here's what's on it....from the Tyros I used Voices (choir patch) pick bass and fusion bass, also some of the percussion is from the Tyros.

There is a synth voice and stereo harp from the MoES

And of course live acoustic guitar.

Scott
BTW the recording process itself really has not changed. Hopefully I am getting better at it and paying more attention to detail. As I mentioned though I did come up with a new user patch re tweaked on my Voiceworks.

The only thing I have started doing differently really is, not do the final mix until the next day. I was doing it the same day and I think by the time I got to the mix my ears were burnt out, so I thing that helped as well.

Wow, that's really good. Much better than the old sound you had. I like the song too.
Reminds me a little of Kawliga.

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/13/04 01:54 PM

Have to agree, much better.. Whatever you did it worked.. The voice clairity is greatly improved. Excellent job! Terry you made a good point about the final mix. That's exactly what I used to do. I too think ones ears can get burned out after working on a song for an extended period of time.. I would record the entire song (vocals and all), and the would go in either several hours later or the next day for the final mix. I found my mixes turned out much better..

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/13/04 03:20 PM

Well done Terry. Crystal clear. I too like that voice in the background that goes wa wa at the end of every verse. Sounds like a synth voice to me. I also like the chorus of the song and the lyrics. It's a very catchy tune. Ok. Now how do I get it out of my head?

Hi Terry.
Much better... Your vocals are a lot clearer and out their... I'd take it down slightly a very very very small twist of the nob... But sounds so much better... You’re starting to get as depressing as me… You’re not there yet but your attempt is quite valiant…

I like it!

Of course I do, it is minor.

If you get the time, some selective harmoney to selective phrases will add extra spice.

Donny
This is off my latest cd, which is the first time that I have combined vocals with my New Age and is split about half and half of each on the cd. The entire cd is on my site if you'd like to hear some of the other vocals on it. From "Rainbows and Roses" on are the vocal cuts.

In direct answer to your Q. I will continue on with this process for the vocals, because I too think they sound good here and is one of the reasons I posted the cut. I thought if you guys panned this one too, then it could only be personal.

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/14/04 03:09 AM

Graham
I wanted to but get into such a tiff with all over the harmonies I decided to leave it out for the most part on this cd. There is a bit of it on a couple of the other cuts on the cd. So I am using more harmonic discretion now. I suppose what I really need to do is find the balance that is right for the type of work I do on any given cut.

Thanks for the listen and input.

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/14/04 06:40 AM

That's REALLY GOOD Terry!!!! LOL, a friend and I were talking the other day about a mutual acquaintance who had died and I remarked that one of the things about growing older is that you get to watch all the people you know die, as your lyrics said) and he thought that was an awful thing to say, however, the longer you live the truer is becomes. Any way, LOVED that song and the way you did it.

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/14/04 08:08 AM

Terry

Have to agree with all the other comments here. You know I'm not the biggest fan of your music and have found it very difficult to get INTO some of your previous stuff, but this one is a WINNER!
I've been waiting for you to break into a chorus for ages and you have actually done it this time. So we have more variation in your song and it's much more melodic.
Your vocals are so much clearer without the added (needless)harmoniser processing. I hear shades of Harry Chapin (an old favourite singer songwriter of mine)and the real quality of you voice shines through.

So, for what they're worth I pass on my highest compliments Terry

Will

Re: Against my better judgement - 02/14/04 10:43 AM

I will add my 2 cents for whatever they're worth.

Terry I agree with everyone else that your vocals are a LOT cleaner sounding and the recording is evidence of that. You actually have quite a unique sounding voice that with a little refinement (which we all could use, right? ) - you could acheive a success in your musical quest and establish a viable market for your Vocal CD's. I'm saying that as a compliment.

On the other hand, to be able to hear some good Voice overs and even some Harmonies would only help to proliferate your CD sales IMHO.

But from what I've heard so far from the TC Helicon VoiceWorks you may consider trading it in for something that will be more effective in generating true lifelike quality Harmony sounds. When hearing your vocal pieces using your VoiceWorks Harmonizer I immediately said to myself "That's one piece of equipment I will never own". If you get a Harmonizer that will actually accentuate your Vocal ability then you will be off to the races IMO.

Best regards,
Mike

Mike & Mike,
Sorry I thought this had all died away and I missed your replies until now.

Thanks for the input. Mike/kebdplyr I disagree of course on the TC, but different strokes. Keep inmind, this is still processed through the Voiceworks, just less of it.

Mike/nard,
I like both of the vocal effects, both ways, but again different strokes.
