Sequencing with keyboard

Sequencing with keyboard - 11/20/02 09:22 AM

Anyone here play a horn or guitar and uses their keyboard to sequence with the styles?

Please don't recommend a computer program. I have Cakewalk, I don't have time to sequence each bass, drum, piano horn section part etc., for each tune I want to do, and besides I rather many of the styles on my keyboard. I can't improve on them.

I go to the store and find the PSR2000 sounds better than I thought at first when I played it last year. Then I get the manual out and it seems that it won't copy and paste measures. This lack of copying and pasting measures makes it useless for sequencing to me.

I could convert my sequences to midi files to play on other keyboards but I would lose the effect of using all of the change on the fly functions I have on my keyboard which gives a more live effect.

Which of you floks have a keyboard that will copy and paste measurers and then copy and paste a whole chorus over and over to complete the tune.

Wow! the 2000 doesn't copy and paste measures.. You sure on that? I thought it did... I thought the 1000/2000's sequencers had copy, track merging, and a whole bunch of other features that were far better than the PSR-740.

I think it copies events. I don't know about coping tracks. I just couldn't see how to copy and paste measures which is obviously much easier than trying to record 3 or 4 choruses with 15 to 20 chords changes in a tune.

The i30 on the screen, push copy measures 1 thru 8 to measure 9. It doesn't get any simpler. No wonder peoplel use Cakewalk if their board can't copy and paste measures.

Again Don, Scott, Dave, Donny and others here have no need to sequence. They can play live all night. I want to play my sax. I have to sequence my tunes for that purpose.

The Yamaha would be a great backup for me which I need in case of a breakdown. But I might consider another board if it can sequence as good as the i30.

However, being as tight as I am, the PSR200 at $899 is very very tempting.

I Hope Tyros does make you copy measures, otherwise - fagetaboutit!

Brick,
Why can't you just record the style you want in Cakewalk and then dub your sax in? You can do however many measures you want then copy and paste.

You could do it either of 2 ways....
1. Record the entire style (or whatever parts of it you want) in as a Wav., through your sound card.
or:
2. You could record them in midi.....either all pieces parts on seperate tracks in 1 shot or as a single track, in 1 shot.

Either way, you would not need to record everything in beat by beat.

And then still dub your sax in on a seperate track and then mix it down.

Terry,

I do this real easy on the i30 in what is called a BSQ mode on the i30 and I have all the functions available. It's just like playing live. I can use the buttons to change the variations, ritard, fills and so on and so forth while I'm playing the sax live.

Every time I do the tune I can do it with a different variation, a different fill and on some styles a different intro and ending. It doesn't get so monotonous having to play it exactly the same way everytime.

NO Yamaha arranger has a copy/paste feature in their sequencer. Sure would be nice to have the Motif features such as chain/pattern offerings. I think Yamaha's idea of 'song marks' in the Tyros is better than anything in the past.

Zuki,
Totally agree with you on the pattern chaining issue.. If Yamaha added this to their arrangers I think it would make song composition a heck of a lot easier. Actually we talked about this in the past a few times too now that I think about it..

This is interesting.... I have not given myself much exposure to other KB's, and I learn a LOT about their features, etc. from this board... but I always felt that they would all be pretty much the same, despite our passionate takings on their differences ... but having a kn6000, I just took for granted that all others had copy/paste/delete/insert/merge etc. functionality for both track and measure use ... sometimes I don't know how I would get by without those functions... perhaps another reason why technics kbs cost more ?!?...
brickboo ... you may want to check what makes/models have these functions and see if you could get on off ebay or some other market.....

Re: Sequencing with keyboard - 11/22/02 12:34 PM

If you guys that do use your keyboard for sequencing, (and it looks like there aren't many of us) ever did it with a touch screen copying, pasting, deleting, and all the other functions and even for something as simple as naming your songs and files, all of the buttons to press to do these things would drive you nuts.

I get a type writer icon on the screen. Just type (touch the screen)for the name of the song or file or change the name of files etc.

Two years now and it ain't sticky with beer yet. Ha! Ha!. If they make a keyboard with at least as good a sequencer as mine with the sounds of the triton and a touch screen, I trade my forklift for one and I'm sure it is worth more than any arranger keyboard.

If you don't sequence on the keyboard I'll say it again, you just need what you like on a board to play live. To me nothing compares with the i30 for sequencing and the styles aren't too bad either. Not trying to ruffle any feathers just stating a fact. the i30 forum guys told me that 2 years ago and they are still right today.

JUst like all of you, I don't like the sax sounds on the i30 either. I don't like the sax sounds on any keyboard. I like the trumpets on the technics.

But for all of the sequencing I do, it's the i30 for me. And with the little few of us that use this feature on our keyboards, I don't think any manufacture is going to worry about pleasing us.

How much would it cost to copy a copy and paste feature from a computer software or whatever and put it on a keyboard.

No copy and paste feature on a keyboard that is supposed to do sequening is plain stupidity. Can you imagine a computer engineer building a keyboard with a sequencer and not figuring this out. It's mind boggeling isn't it?

I know my spelling and grammer is awful, but I'm smart enough to figure out that a sequencer is usless without a copy and paste measure, tracks and so on an so forth.

Wow!!Dave's right I'm babbling again. Am I the only one here not allowed to bable?

I like all of you guys even if we don't see eye to eye.

Let me know when it's time to pick a fight with Dave again.

Boo. Most keyboards today including the PSR2000, this uses Easy Record the same as your i30 BSQ.
As you have always liked KORG Treat yourself to a PA80 its only a little more than the 2000 and very well constructed.
Knocking up a song in BIAB takes 5 to 10 minutes. Just enter the chords and the program arranges the backing in seconds. Then save as a Midi File.

Nice to hear you are a true senior citizen now being retired.

Re: Sequencing with keyboard - 11/22/02 04:51 PM

Dnj - I do sing and play the keyboard live 50% or more of the time. The sax playing is an added feature that catches some by surprise and gets their attention.

Smf's are monotonous. They play the same identical way every time. Backing Sequence Mode on the i30 allows me to use most functions as if I were playing live so as to be able to change variations, intro's, endings, fills etc, etc etc, on the fly just like playing live. Can't do that with Midi files

Graham - I have maybe 10 or so tunes as Midi files from BIAB but there's no way to make them shine like the Korg styles. They make things interesting and make for more variety. However, there is no comparison between BIAB and any keyboard styles.

So far only Tony the Technics player seems to be surprised that some of the other keyboards won't copy and paste measures. He thought they all did this simple but very valuable feature for his and my needs. The point I'm trying to make here is that just about every keyboard has better styles than any computer software I've seen.

I have Jammer Pro also and I have maybe 20 or 30 tunes from it that I play through the keyboard as midi files to play my sax. But neither do they shine like any of the keyboard styles I've heard on any keyboard.

So, why don't they make the sequencer to copy and paste measures on all keyboards. You who do not sequence a bunch with your keyboards will never appreciate what we're talking about. And thats OK. I see I'm in the minority here.

Hey I'm a minority. Maybe I can get a Government loan and manufacture an arranger that can do copy and paste in the sequencer, with right hand chord recognition, rootless chord recognition, amd real sounding horns.
Oh yeah!! and a 38-24-38 blonde to sing backup and turn the sheet music for Fran and some of the other guys eh? Better make that a redhead for Dave, and a 6'2" for DonM.
