Easy listening songs for quiet gigs - 04/17/05 07:37 AM

I am assembling a play list for quiet performances. No rock songs, no twangy country, nothing loud. For more intimate settings. More like what you'd hear from a jazz combo. Nothing too sad, nothing gawdy. Ones that lends themselves to jazzy arrangements are favored. I don't know very many old standards, I guess I should learn a few. Here are a few I have from mostly the pop world.

Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying
Gerry & The Pacemakers

Oh Susanna
James Taylor

If
Bread

When You Say Nothing At All
Keith Whitley / Allison Krauss

Georgia On My Mind
Ray Charles

Crazy
Willie Nelson

Tequila Sunrise
Eagles

Something Stupid
The Mavericks

You Don't Know Me
Eddie Arnold

Ain't Misbehavin'
Fats Waller

Desperado
Eagles

Vincent
Don McClean

True Love Ways
Buddy Holly

At Last
Etta James

Fire And Rain
James Taylor

Over The Rainbow
Judy Garland

You've Got A Friend
Carole King

Maybe I Should Stay Here
Alan Jackson

Love Me Tender
Elvis

What A Wonderful World
Louis Armstrong

Dream A Little Dream Of Me
Mama Cass

If you have any you really like, please post.

Hi Tony, this Bill, not Mike.

I need to find some standards that I know the melody to. I have never been a fan of Sinatra or Johnny Mathis or those guys... I'm a rock world / country world / pop world guy. But I do want to learn a handful of real standards.

Mostly, I guess I'm looking for more songs in the pop world that do nicely for easy listening / jazzy arrangements / piano arrangements. But if anyone wants to post "must do" standards, that might be interesting to see what you say.

- Long Ago & Far Away (Kern & Gershwin)
this is sweet sounding when done slow and easy swing.
- Lil Darlin (played a little quicker than Basie style is really nice on electric piano)
- My Romance (R. Rodgers)
- Thou Swell (R. Rodgers)
- Tea for Two
- Here's that rainy day
- I'll never smile again (until I smile at you...)
- Fly me to the moon
