OT - How To Warm Up Digital Recording? - 08/02/05 07:44 AM

I just obtained a Sony ECM-MS957 mic for recording live music/concerts into my Sony portable minidisc recorder.

It does a great job of recording except for one thing... the recordings come out somewhat "digital" (metal) sounding. I can transfer to my computer and render mp3, but does anyone have a suggestion for a software or plug-in that would warm up the sound? Thanks for any help.

Glenn, how do you transfer MD data to a computer? You mean, you play the MD file through your soundcard and record THAT and then convert to MP3 or is there something I am missing? I am unaware of any way to convert MD files without re-recording them.

P.S. I thought MD files are known for providing excellent sound. So, your post surprises me a bit. My only gripe with MD is what I am posting about... you can't simply convert the MD data.

That's the only way you can do it with a portable MD unit, which only has analog out. However, some MD decks have digital in/outs that provide data transfer.

Well, I personally use iZotope Ozone for Winamp to warm up my wave/mp3 files, You can also use the VST version, although that one costs much more, it has a lot more features.
You can download a limited version of the Ozone plugin for Winamp at: http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=79374

To render your wave and/or mp3 files, just install the plugin and change the output to Nullsoft Disk Writer in the Configuration window of Winamp.

The full version of the Ozone plugin for Winamp costs $29, the more elaborate VST version costs $249.

PS: If you want a better mp3 decoder for Winamp try the MAD plugin: http://www.mars.org/home/rob/proj/mpeg/mad-plugin/
