It was a different crowd back then.
Don't recognize to many people.

I joined shortly after it started, but don't recall the date. About the only ones around way back then there are still here now are Bob Gelman and Uncle Dave.

Yes Larry !!!!! It was 1994 when I was pissed that there was no central portal that gave me links to all the synthesizer related websites. I collected the ones I could find into my own bookmark and then put that online as my homepage and called it Synth Zone. Even today I occasionally come across links to www.rain.org/~nigelsp which of course haven't worked since 1996 when I bought the domain synthzone.com

When I first put Synth Zone online people started coming here and it continued to grow. In 1997 I decided to start up that old BBS so people could talk together. Unfortunately because there were no security controls that BBS ended up getting spammed to death so in 1998 I bought the current UBBS system that provided the password system that allowed me control over troublesome users. I know the UBBS software is very simple and lacks some of the bell and whistles of newer systems but I really don't want to lose the past messages in the BBS and I am reluctant to start again from the ground up.

Thanks Larry for the 10 year birthday wishes. A decade seemed like a long time to me once but somehow it quickly passed me by. It's just great we are all here in 2004 !!!!

Wow, the WWW was around in '94? I had no idea, I knew there were BBS's you could dial into and AOL had some stuff but not the WWW. No doubt it was probably more expensive back then since there weren't as many local providers as there are now.

The World Wide Web started in 93 I think it was. I remember the first web browser I used was Lynx on a remote server which was a text browser only. Netscape was launched in 94 and was derived from the Mosaic browser. This of course before Microsoft Internet Explorer even existed.

Wow!

How cool to see what SynthZone used to look like! I was just a lurker back then. I read Chris Hansen's Arranger Forum all the time, but I never posted. It all comes back to you when you see it again.

Happy Birthday to SynthZone and Nigel and here's to 10 more years, at least!

Here is the final Arranger Keyboard Forum page at http://web.archive.org/web/20010302083851/www.synthzone.com/msg/hansen/hanseneold.html There are many familiar names back then. It takes a long time to load this page so be patient.

It only took a second to load for me. And I see a lot of familiar names there. Some of us even still have the same email address! Imagine that!

And now you know why I changed BBS systems at that time. It became tooooooo painful waiting.

But the best way to view these messages is to right click on the postings and open in a new window. That avoids having to keep reloading the main page. Then shut the posting window and open another. Very quick not having to wait for the main page to reload each time.

RyanS
I remember the www hitting hard back in 93 and 94. When I graduated from highschool, our school had (1) yes count that (one) computer that was set up for that usage. It has changed a lot since then too, and yes the prices were CRAZY then. Severs charged by minute, hour, and any way they could to get that dough. Companies like AOL made sooooo much money back then. It really started to change when companies like Net Zero came into the light Funny thing here..., I was looking at an old car magazine from the late 80's and boy did that take me a step back.. There was an ad for cell phones. Holy crap I forgot how expensive those things used to be. The phones alone were selling for $400, and even some in the $600's. That was back when companies charged you like $3.00 a minute! Yikes. Plus the phones were so big. I remember my father's first cell phone. It looked like a military field radio

When I was in high school, calculators hadn't been invented, except adding machines. In typing class, we had manual typewriters until my senior year when we go ONE electric.
Eight-track tape players hadn't come out yet either.

Dave was an Uncle way back then already.

I wonder what keyboard he used in 1994?

And I wonder how many he's has since....

Well actually if you look down the page you can see when Dave Boyd actually became Uncle Dave within a few postings. I guess life online is an evolutionary process. Give it another 10 years and it maybe Grandpa Dave

Re: SYNTH ZONE 1997 - 09/10/04 11:06 AM

I also used to come to synthzone back in the 1996-1997-1998 time frame, but never posted. I was mainly looking for "oriental" synth information and there was non back then, so did not last for ever....then a few years ago I browse again and find there is alotttt more to learn (including the "oriental" arranger forum section).

Thanks Nigel for the best musician's website on the net.
