Can't figure how to play piano like Jerry Lee Lewis - 07/02/07 10:56 PM

Does anyone have any ideas on learning to play piano in the Jerry Lee style? I know he uses simple blues scales, but he's got a unique style all his own. I've been all over the Net and can't find any music books or appropriate sites. Any suggestions on where I can find "riffs" that reek of Jerry Lee?

It might involve your 13 year old cousin, too

...kick that bench...play those keys from every possible angle and position...hammer that piano like there's no tomorrow... then set it on fire...but KEEP on playing!

Isn't that a form of what they call "stride piano"?
I would do an internet search on "stride" piano all the major publishers have books about it some have videos also.

Go to www.musicrobot.com and download Jerry Lee's "Great Balls of Fire." Load that into your sequencer and print out the piano channel. The midi is pretty close and the print out should give you some indication of what's happening.

You're not going to play J. Lewis style on a keyboard are you??? If so you better use weighted keys. His style of playing will destroy a synth action keybed. A Yamah PSR-3000 woudn't last 48 hours under his fingers The Roland G-70, and Tyros 2 keybed might have a fighting chance, but even that's pushing it!

If the boards survive the onslaught than he hasn't played like Jerry Lee Lewis, Squeak.

By the way, how are you? Haven't heard from you for quite some time.

Taike,
I've been good, just been "really" busy. I've gone back to work since graduating from college. I'm still a full time dad, and homemaker, but I now work at least 35 hours a week on top of that. So my schedule has been really tight lately. Today's my day off

I'm working on the management staff as a part-time shift manager at a well known pizza chain. The place is literally within walking distance from my home. From my driveway to the parking lot by car it takes less than 3 minutes (that's with traffic too.., so I use no gas to get there).... Anyway that job keeps me busy. I wanted to go back to work, even though the wife and I are not hurting for money. Having some "extra cash" isn't such a bad thing either

I was lucky to get a job as a manager based on the times I'm available to work. Plus so close to home. Can't go wrong there, and the perks are great too.

How's that baby of yours doing Taike?

Squeak, just make sure those "perks" don't make it impossible for you to squeeze your gut behind a keyboard (and still reach the keys) .

That picture of Jerry Lee shows you can still pound a piano with a gut! Just move the stool back a bit (and THEN kick it over!)

I don't know about stride, but boogie-woogie would (IMO) be probably the best thing to learn to get a basic on some of Jerry's stylings...

Nope, don't sing or play the song and have no intention or desire to do so anytime soon

The Pizza Hut I work for is "VERY" popular. Again (our store) ranks as one of the top Pizza Huts in the state--and we're probaby one of the "smaller" stores (physically in size).

I live in the 4th fastest growing city in West Virginia. The population boom here over the last 10 years would blow your mind. The amount of business we do is probably 5-6 times over what the store was built to handle. We have a small dining room, but on Wednesday nights we got people that will literally "stand" to get to that buffet

I like working for this company (at least on the management end of things). As this area continues to expand our numbers have just been climbing--and fast! If you saw what our sales were in one week, you'd literally crap your pants......

You're right boogie woogie is a better example, I was thinking stride and even some ragtime for the repetitive left hand bass technique.
