How to Use PA800 as a Sound System

How to Use PA800 as a Sound System - 08/05/08 11:39 AM

I am trying to figure out how I can use my PA800 as a sound system for my computer MP3 software programs (Zune, Musicmatch, etc) using the USB connections between them.

I know I can use the output of the computer sound board to the Korg but I want only to use the USB cable.

Any suggestions?

You cannot use the PA800 as a soundboard for your PC via usb as the USB connection on the PA is data and MIDI only. It is not an audio interface.

However, what you could do is buy a minijack(stereo) to 1/4" jack x 2 cable and connect this from your PC soundcard out (its usually coloured green) to the 2 audio in jacks on the PA. These are automatically hard-wired to the main L/R outs

Dennis

Edited to say the cable is essentially a "Y" cable with the mini stereo at one end and the 2 1/4" jacks at the other end. I re-read the post and thought my original description may have implied 2 seperate cables.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you for your information even though I am sorry to hear that I cannot not use the PA800 as a sound board.

I have been looking into the Creative Labs External USB Sound Boards. Now I don't believe these will help either.

Cheers,

Ron you could use an external audio interface like the Creative. It would be not much different from using the PC soundcard (although much better quality, usually!!)

It will have audio outputs and these can be, in turn, connected to the audio inputs on the PA thereby allowing you to play audio from the PC using the speaker system of the PA800.

Great Dennis,

I will check that out. I'll be looking for a small unit with great sounds.

Hi Fran,

Glad you mentioned the Edirol UA-1EX. Since I have been shopping around for such a device; I now have something to compare. I was leading towards Creative Labs X-Mod or the Creative Labs X-FI 5.1

I didn't even know that these devices were available so I have to read about their features and specs.

Thanks for the information.

Hi Ron,
you weren't by any chance a KN7000 user?

It was a brilliant soundcard.

best wishes

Hi Rikki,

Yes, I was a KN7000 user and have one that I'll be selling sometime as soon as my heart will let it go. I just purchased a Korg PA800 a few weeks ago and need to spend all of my devotion there.

Now, how and where have we crossed path/s? I am very curious.

Hi Ron,
ex Technics KN7000 user. Regretted selling for 4 years till I finally found the PA800 .
As soon as you mentioned the usb & keyboard as soundcard, I figured you must have been a Technics user.
Must admit I took the soundcard function for granted, I thought it had something to do with the usb. Alas , no.

Belong to a number of forums including Korg, Creatasongstyle, PSR forums, used to run a stylemaking forum & used to be actively involved the Synthzone Technics & Ketron forum.

Lost track of the rest haa haa.

best wishes
Rikki

Rikki,

You have a superb analytical mind. You could have been a great detective. Yes, I too, will probably regret selling my KN7000 and thought all boards could be used as a sound system as the KN7000. Fortunately for us we are able to find new tech devices to quench our thirst for lost "features" that we once had. Now, I'm seeking speakers to make the PA800 sound like the KN7000.

Very glad you made yourself known and happy to hear that you too are a Korg PA800. Maybe this board was the closest replacement for the KN7000 and that we made a good choice. Why, oh, why did Technics stop being in the KB business. Major mistake.

Stay tuned,

Ron

Ron,
You will NOT regret the move UP to the PA800. (BTW - you and I have a history too, remember the mini disks?)
Then sounds are amazing, the styles have realism and punch and the vocal input, well....the Technics was the all time WORST at that !

Hi 'ol friend

Yes, I remember Uncle Dave with warm memories. I bought your PSR9000 and we celebrated having lunch together near Baltimore. You also bought or we traded other synths and exchanged many midi files, etc. Glad to see you are still around and kickin'. I'm retired now living alone near Jacksonville, Fl and having a ball of a time. It is really great not working everyday. I have time on my hands and music in my heart.

Stay tuned Dave, and it great to hear from you.

Hi Ron,
must say, I don't really miss the the KN7000 anymore, (because I luv the korg )
What I missed the most initially , was the wonderful Synthzone Technics community we had for so many years. Admittedly it still exists, but quite a number of us went our seperate ways. Roland, Yamaha, korg etc.

I bought my first Technics ( KN800) in 1989??
Would have been great to have had a KN8000 , or maybe a KN9000 by now . haahaa

If we can be of any help with the PA800, let us know.
There's a lot of functions I haven't really delved into, I'm sort uv' stuck in the Style Creation section of my keyboard. Find all the functions there fascinating..

best wishes
Rikki

Have you been following the BIAB/Style thread at Korg Forums? I did notice your name crop up a while back.

Re: How to Use PA800 as a Sound System - 08/07/08 08:12 PM

Rikki,
The PA800 is slowing taking my interest away from the KN7000 and I am sure that I will let go of the KN7000. I am slowing selling all of its extras so the end is near. I wasn't too active with most Synthzone communities and I know I would have enjoyed the Technics community. In fact, the Synth Zone is priceless.

Since I am a user of BIAB and ProAudio I may have used some internet forum/s pertaining to such, but can't recall.

Thanks for offering me your help in any future need.

Hi Ron,
there's a huge PG Music forum for BIAB, Powertracks & the new Real Band software.
I pop up there sometimes too.

Bill,

Well, since I check pgmusic from time to time, I suppose I'm losing my observation/s. I do like almost all of Pgmusic products and will look into this item.

Thank you for your time and information.

Hi Ron,
Real Bands based on the Powertracks sequencer, but has the ability to load the BIAB styles & audio files directly.
You also have a bit more control over the BIAB tracks it generates.

Still got the odd bug here & there.

My BIAB Megapak was up to date with all the styles audio files etc, only cost me $59 to add Real Band. Different packages available depending on what you've got aready.

Hi Rikki,

I have BIAB 2007 and Power Tracks 12. I will check with PGmusic to see what my upgrade will cost. Their upgrade pricing chart overextends horizontally on my monitor and I cannot reduce or scroll their chart to see my pricing options. Waiting for one of their online operators to contact me.

Stay tuned,

Ron
