Technics Kn7000 Encoder problems

Technics Kn7000 Encoder problems - 09/12/21 03:33 PM

Hello fellow Technics users. I just bought a KN-7000 today, for $275 in a pretty good shape.

Everything works on it, except the rotary encoder (tempo dial), it's just jumping up and down as you turn it, can't really adjust the tempo, well you can... but it takes a lot of rotations.

Question: Would a simple cleaning solve this issue, like Dioxit? or I have to buy a new encoder from somewhere?

This is the Part Number QSRGT003AA , but unfortunately Panasonic does not make it anymore.

Also if you ever did fix this rotary encoder or replaced it, let me know what to avoid, so I won't do any damage, especially at disassembly. Soldering is not an issue...

And also if you know a substitute rotary encoder, that worked for you let me know please.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you!

I have a similar problem with mine.
I find it works reasonably well if I do not rush it, and keep a little pressure on the wheel.
i have also sprayed it (WD40) a few times which does have an effect for a while.
Age is a nasty thing !!!!

Ray, I wouldn't use WD-40 on electronics, there are cleaners/lubricants specifically made for delicate electronic components, like Deoxit F5 (for pots) or D5 (switches and encoders). The best route is probably to replace it, but I'm kind of curious if cleaning would solve this issue.

I remember back in the 90's I had a Roland D-10, to adjust the drum machine tempo you had a slider pot, and that thing was worn out. I remember during couple of gigs in the middle of a slow song like t = 70 beats/min, the drum machine would go to 200 or something beats/min, just on it's own. You can imagine the faces on the people who were dancing on the floor... :)), but later I had it fixed, it was very awkward though...

Since I got this KN7000 my cat is also very fond of it, not only about the sounds, but she is taking a lot of interest in the Bass Reflex hole on the back. I'm sure there are no mice in it, but it's funny as hell to see her excitement...

Lucky you getting a KN7000 for $275. Unheard of for what they sell on eBay. Presently one for $2,500.

I said WD40 because I could not remember the name of the product.
It used an electronics spray I used.
I think you stole the KN at $275 !!
I could be interested in your fitting of new encoder.
Please let me know how it goes.

My KN previous owner had a cat. The fur penetrated into the internal body of the keyboard, which I removed.

Ray, it's going to take a while, I have another keyboard to fix at the moment, but once I start working on the Kn7000 I'll post my findings here.

Hey Rog,
The encoder is the tempo control,(unless I am mistaken, which happens far too often these days).

Roger, that Gotek Floppy emulator drive is a substitute for your floppy disk that you have inside your Technics KN-XXXX. On e-bay one guy is selling it from England, but the chap won't ship it to the States, although I wouldn't replace my floppy disk drive, I try to keep my keyboard as original as possible, plus a Technics Kn-7000 has an SD card, which is pretty good for what I need it.

I can't believe this KN-7000 it's so expensive. I was very lucky, and I didn't even wanted to buy it the first time because of the rotary encoder problem. I asked the guy after a week if he still had it for sale, he said no one showed up to buy it, so I said alright I'll give you $275 for it, and he said yes.

Now I have to fix that encoder, but I tell you what, this keyboard sounds very good. I owned Rolands all my life, but now I understand the big fuss around the KN-7000. I just only wish they would've made it with 76 keys, like the Roland G70.

So it replaces the floppy disk drive - doesn't look like it would fit in there; and then I suppose there's got to be a bit of software update so that the KN7000 recognises the new unit. See www.technicskn7000styles.com for interest...

Re: Technics Kn7000 Encoder problems - 09/15/21 04:16 PM

It says >> " It is literally a 'plug-in and play' setup. 'EVERYTHING' you need to fit the unit is included. ". This quote is from this ebay address:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/133549650220?hash=item1f182df12c:g:sccAAOSwADZfhHWV

It doesn't mention anything about a software update, actually it shouldn't, once installed the KN-7000 should recognize it as it's own, but that's only my opinion, I would do some more research on that if I were you.

Why would you want to replace the Floppy Disk Drive ? Unless it has gone faulty........

For spare Encoder try Email;- enquiries@wdgreenhill.com

As Bill says "why would you .....".
My friend replaced his floppy on his 6500 with one of these, and uses the usb drive. because it does not have the SD card facility

It fitted exactly into the floppy spot.

I can understand replacing it on the KN-6500, or KN-5000, but the KN-7000 has an SD card reader, I don't see any advantage for the KN-7000, plus, the position of the floppy drive, makes you bend down in order to see the OLED display.

Roger, it doesn't matter what we say, what matters is what makes you happy. If that's what you want, go for it.

No - I don't want it - I was just interested in what it does...
