KN2000: Impossible to load a MIDI file

KN2000: Impossible to load a MIDI file - 05/25/07 12:01 PM

Hi, I bought a KN2000 some days ago and I'm having big problems with MIDI files.
I tried to format a 720K floppy on the keyboard and copied on it some MIDIs from my PC (XP)
The keyboard seems to recognize them only if they are placed in a subfolder on the floppy, but every time I try to load one the display
says: "This is not a STANDARD MIDI FILE"
What can I do to have some of my thousands of MIDIs played on the keyboard?

I don't know if it can help but if I download some of the "converted styles for KN2000" from Gunnar Gotaas' site the keyboard says that they are for another product...

With Gunnar help I have tried almost everything:

1. Convert files to 0 and 1 format
2. Saving in the root of A:
3. Reduce tracks to 16
4. Convert file to format1 and GM initializing it
5. Use Win98 instead of XP to save files on floppy

The strange thing is that none of the midi files can be loaded. Some files are not even seen by the keyboard, either i place them in the root of A: or in a subfolder on A: (note: this way I've been able to let the keyboard "see" some files, but not to load them).
Every recognized file gave me a "not a standard midi file"...

I was thinking of a floppy/drive failure but trying to load some styles from a floppy I received with the keyboard worked out.

It's a real mistery to me! This thing is driving me crazy...

Please help.

P.S.: Thanks Gunnar for pointing me here.

Lucas are you sure you successfully formatted the floppy on the KN2000?

Try re formatting again..

Yes, I tried to format about 20 times or more, I tried several floppies, etc.

Yes, that was one of the first bunch of sites I've visited to try to go through the problem, but that's not my case. I'm using NEW floppies, formatted in the keyboard.

Hi Luca, nice to see you found the way to SZ

I't some years ago since I had the KN2000, but the one I had did
not read midifiles correctly. It did load and play some, but many
would not load and play. Anyway, I could see all files in the
loading screen, so your problem may not be the same.
The solution back then, was a rom-update, had to replace 2 rom
chips who had a newer version who probably fixed some OS bugs.

You say you can load and play some files? Do you know if that is
"Standard Midi" files or "homemade"?

I've made a test on a old version of EMC StyleWorks, converted
the midi to a Technics sequenser song, look in your mail and see
what you find.
It's very important that you unzip the files stright to the root
of diskette ( A: ).

How you managed to make your KN read from subfolders is a bit
strange.... are you sure that there was'nt any "hidden" files on
the diskette you used at the moment?
I.e. some Technics styledisks have the fileatr. set as hidden.

Good luck and happy playing

Hmmmm....

Just for a test.
Since you have Win98 on a PC, try this "old trick" as well:

Put a bit of tape to cover the hole who is not closeable at
a 1.44HD diskette.
Format it as a 720DD in Win98, then copy some files into it
and try load into KN2000.
It might be worth a try, I've seen some problems solved that
way before.
Also 720DD disks are hard to find nowadays.. looks like time
and developements run fast.

Good luck, but don't forget to take a break and have some
nice moments by Happy Playing as well.

Hi all, PROBLEM SOLVED!
For some strange reason I have to format floppies on Win98 and now the keyboard loads midis.
I don't know why my KN2000 doesn't recognize floppies formatted by itself...

Thank you for support anyway!

That's good to hear!

Maybe a cleaning operation should be done to your KN's floppy
drive? That may solve the format failure, dusty and dirty heads
can be the problem.
The easy way are to buy a cleaning diskette set at your local
PC shop and run it, the hard way are to open the drive and
clean the read/write head manually.
If so, be very careful, gently use a soft cotton-pin and cleaning
licuid such as technical alcohol etc.

Also you could try a factory reset just as a test to see if it is
a "bug" who might disapear by the reset.

Enjoy the music.
Happy Playing.
