midi connection

Hello to all you technophiles out there, can you help. I have my KN7 connected to my computer via usb to play music through, works fine.
I have connected midi leads to the Kn, bought from Technote, to the joystick port on the computer as instructed.
when connected i lose the sound connection i had before and have to disconnect the midi leads and reset initial settings on the KN to regain my sound connection with the computer.
I run XP Professional.

Please help as i am trying to get into using midi.

I suspect it may be a case of either one or the other, but not both at the same time. I'm sure Alec can confirm.......

there's no point in using the midi connection because both audio and midi can be run simultaneously through the usb, just select Panasonic USB in the midi device pick list.

so it is a case of not needing the midi cables connected because the usb does the same job?
