Using USB For Computer Playback

Using USB For Computer Playback - 04/22/03 01:27 PM

I want to bypass the soundcard and transmit midi e.g. to KN via USB. I am running win 2000 pro on a 750 laptop.
I went into control panel and chose Panosonic USB1 for midi playback. My connection with the 7000 is fine.

Do you have to setup midi channels ?
Am I wrong that this can be done to give one better quality sound ?

if it sounds right you don't need to do anything. Try playing back via your soundcard midi voices (say played back through the 7k speakers via the panasonic wave usb audio driver) and then via the 7k midi voices (using the panasonic midi usb driver)... you'll soon hear the difference

Thanks Alec
Just to make sure my audio paths are correct,I have midi1 and 2 listed. Which is the better for playback. Also I have the USB connection and line in both connected. No sound when line in is disconnected. Is that right ?

midi 1 and 2 are independent, so you can choose either or both in whatever driving program you use, with whatever assignments you want.

Using audio usb turns the kn7000 into amplifier and speakers for whichever sounds your laptop produce internally, you don't need any audio leads connected. Using midi usb sends control data to the sound generators inside the 7k; they are different animals [it's all explained you know where ]

I agree that the USB playback of midi files is superior to any soundcard except, every file I have tried has had disasterous results. The sounds keep sustaining and I cannot stop it. I have to stop the USB then turn off the kn altogether to get it all notes off.
Too bad, there's always some fly in the ointment it seems.

there is a panic button in the initial favorites page 4 which you can program to whichever favorite page you prefer for that very purpose, but there could be a hundred reasons in your setup to cause it.

with the 7k in its initial state there should be no problem just playing back midis through usb. I can't predict anything without seeing the settings you have in whichever pc program you are using but would suggest, initialise the 7k midi, only enable one driver for playback only in the pc, disable midi through in the pc, try a midi preset in the 7k - sequencer in to 7k as slave without apc - but most probably there is a setting in your pc playback program causing it.
