Willum's web page...Help - 12/20/05 05:15 AM

Would anyone know why a web page would look all jumbled and scrambled for one person(me) and not others? That is, words on top of words, sentences on top of sentences.

I am refering to Bill Norries fine Technics site that does not "display" correctly for me.

I'm using a PC with XP and a screen resoulution of 1024 X 768. I cleared out IE cache, but it did not help.

Here is a screen capture picture of Willum's site as it appears on my computer: http://s52.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1J6BN2QRJ2E8V3C1ZXQUNN33KB

Compare this to the same link on his page, and let us know if you have a similar problem. http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/willumspages/Page7.html

But better yet, if you know the reason for the "messed up" page display, please let me know why, and how to correct it. Both Bill and I can't figure this one out.

Thanks for your help, and Happy Holidays

Hi Larry,

As requested, I clicked on Willums site shown in your posting and got a warning message from Microsoft saying my computer could be infected from SPYWARE and advised not to go any further which I didn't.

Maybe you've got some sort of 'bug' on your PC. I just hope it's not on mine now. I think I'll try Willum's site from my own PC and see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Larry,

My own web address for Willum's Site brought it up as it should be. (Whew! what a relief)
I hope it doesn't mean trouble for you. Can I suggest you try another site to see whether it's the same, that way you'll know if it is your PC.

Good luck!

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/20/05 08:20 AM

its a common problem seen in amateur pages with various older basic html editing programs, for example created at 1024x768 frames, something will be displaced at 1600x1200 by missing header information, or fine in IE5 will be messed up in IE6, or fine in IE will be all over the place in Netscape etc, too many variables to be specific but it looks like the page might be better off as one layer. That particular page is fine on my 17inch 1440x900 widescreen for example but just as jumbled up on my 16inch 1600x1200 laptop. Beyond all the latest windows updates not a lot you can do at your end - see how it looks in Firefox?

Larry,

I don't if this can help but check the browser settings under View Text Size and Encoding.

Also check that you have both "Times New Roman", "Serif" fonts installed on your computer.

This is all very interesting. I created my web site several years ago and based it on 800 X 600 resolution, which I was told is standard for web pages. I would be interested in knowing if my site comes up properly, due to so many changes. http://www.garnetrecords.com/

nsr007, your web site displays perfectly for me.

Heather, under text size I have medium ticked, and under Encoding I have Western European. (sidebar question...should 'auto select' be checked?)
I also have all the standard fonts that came with Windows XP.

I have not noticed any other web sites with Willum's display problem. In fact, I don't remember Willum's site displaying "all over the place". But then, it's been a while since my last visit.

I keep my computer up to date, have no virus's, and regularly 'clean up', so this is why I'm puzzeled.

I'll try Firefox Browser, and report my results. I thought something was wrong with my IE6 settings, but as Alec pointed out, certain variables can contribute to a jumbled display as indicated on his various computers

Thanks

Same messed up results with Firefox.
The mystery continues...

Thanks, guys for telling me my site comes up OK. I made sure it came up in both Internet Explorer and Netscape. I prefer using Netscape as a browser because I get my mail there. Netscape is so much faster as a browser than Internet Explorer and especially, getting and sending email.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/20/05 02:34 PM

Well a discovery.

With Firefox if I decrease the font size to a rather tiny display, the page displays fine.
(Although it's a little too small for these old eyes)

I tried reducing the font size in Internet Explorer, but it didn't help the display. So for now I'll use Firefox and the tiny fonts to view Willum's page...unless anyone knows a better fix.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/20/05 02:47 PM

Another thing I forgot to point out.

Using Internet Explorer, I am unable to change the text size on Willum's site. (No problem on other sites). Thus it remains scrambled.

However,

With Firefox, I can reduce the text on his site to a very tiny size, so that the page displays correctly.

Weird...I got to get away from this for a bit, before it drives me up a wall

Larry

Hi Larry.

Check and try the following. Make a note of the present settings you have incase you need to revert back to them.

Open Explorer and go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS
GENERAL TAB Click on COLORS, and make sure "USE WINDOWS COLORS" is checked, click OK.

Back to GENERAL TAB Click on FONTS, make sure:
LATIN BASED under Language Script is selected.
TIMES NEW ROMAN under Web Page Font is selected.
COURIER NEW under Plain Text Font is selected.
Click OK.

Back to GENERAL TAB Click on ACCESSIBILTY:
Make sure nothing is checked here, all should be unchecked.

ADVANCDED TAB, make sure you make a note of all that are checked in case you need to revert back to them. Click on Restore Defaults, click ok.

Then go to VIEW, and change text size to Medium.

Oh! And check your monitor setting, making sure you are using a common display mode. 800x600 or 768x1024 etc.

If all these are tried, and you still have the problem. Reboot, and if still having the problem, then as you said, the Mystery Continues...

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 06:03 AM

Over the past couple of days, I have carried out a number of tests of my website, using some of the more popular internet browsers. The programs I tested were :
Internet Explorer v5
Internet Explorer v6
Mozilla Firefox v1.5
Opera v8.51
Netscape v8.0.4

The programs were tested using Windows XP with SP2 and all recent updates from Microsoft. The tests were carried out on three different PCs, including a laptop. All browsers were checked at the following commonly used screen resolutions :

800 x 600 : 1024 x 768 : 1280 x 1024

None of my graphics cards allow me to use the more 'exotic' higher resolutions

Apart from a minor problem with the Scrolling Java applet at the top of the home page, when using Mozilla Firefox, and Netscape not playing the background music files, I found no other defects.

one possible factor, but obviously not in Larry's case, after all posting that it works on your computer hardly tells us anything groundbreakingly new - that most pcs display most web pages ok

I informed Larry that I had several other people check out my website and no problems were reported so they were not just checked on my PCs

Hi Willum,

I use Netscape as a browser and noticed that your music doesn't come up. Why is that?

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 12:04 PM

Anthony,

I tried your suggestion..step by step, with no improvement. Thanks anyway.

Using Internet Explorer 6, Windows XP SP2
I cannot change the text size on Willum's page. I'd be interested if anyone can change the text size on his site, using IE6.
(I can change the text size on most other sites)

As mentioned above, I can change the text size with Firefox, but to view a normal display I have to reduce the text size to such a small size, I can hardly see it.

I think Alec is correct. What works on one computer, may not work on another. Willum's page may display fine on 99 out of 100 setups. I could be that 1 in a 100 who's display is incompatable with Willum's website.

I'll try a few other options, before I throw in the towel.

ps...the music plays fine, although even with broadband there is a slight delay for the page and music to load.

naturally, this thread is just so amusing to see the blindingly obvious stated as if some revelation I came across the exactly the same problem maybe 10? years ago when making my first commercial website. Checking through and simplifying the page headers and layer order partially solved the problem but changing the html editing program solved the problem entirely on the affected browsers... at least those I knew about

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 03:06 PM

Hi Larry:

Well it was worth a shot. Curious about what your monitor dpi setting is?

In XP, goto the Display Properties, Click on the Settings Tab, there click on the Advanced button. In the General Tab you should be able to see your monitor dpi setting. Is it set at 96 the normal setting? If it is then scratch that off the list. If it is not at 96, be careful in changing it back, this can be tricky on some machines. I never changed mine and thought of this as an after thought.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 03:11 PM

Larry I see exactly the same as you do on Bill's site. I've always had that problem. I usually use Opera. I notice in Firefox the problem goes away when I make the fonts smaller....in Opera the problem never goes away, even at a tiny size. Glad I know now I can view it ok in Firefox, just have to make the letters a little smaller to clear it out.

I suspect I know why I have the problem. I have bad eyes so I have set the fonts larger in XP. In display properties I have the fonts set to 120% DPI. I don't know if that might be your problem or not.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 07:04 PM

Here is my setup:

An updated Windows XP Home with SP2
Internet Explorer 6.0....
Display Settings: 1024 x 768
32bit highest color quality
DPI settings: 124%
Screen Refresh Rate:75 Hertz
Internet Explorer Text Size: Medium
Encoding: Western European (Windows)

I, like Marilyan, prefer an increased font size when using a 1024 X 768 display setting. Thus far, the only site that I have display problems using this setting is Willum's.

Since Alec has similar trouble on one of his laptops, and Marilyan's computer has the same symptoms on Willum's site, I must aggree with Alec, that it's Willum's HTML program that is the problem for some displays.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 07:13 PM

I believe the culprit is the screen resolution size setting. It's my guess to view Willum's site correctly, one must have the normal dpi of 96 set.

If this setting is different then the display may not be 100% compatible with certain webpages. Just a thought.

Re: Willum's web page...Help - 12/22/05 07:58 PM

Anthony

Bingo !

You have found the answer!

I tried the normal DPI setting of 96, and I am able to view Willum's site with no problem.

However, even though I can increase the text size for most sites, most everything else is too small at 1024 X 768 /normal 96 DPI. I'll need to change back to 124 DPI.

So, again thanks for solving this "mystery".

Case Closed?
