Anyone out there that can help me figure out how to use a Tascam dr05. I'm getting very little volume out of the built in speaker. I have speaker turned on and vol set to max.

The play back speaker on the back is not meant for general listening, you are meant to use ear phones; or connect/ play through another unit. It is very low and can only be hear when close to your ear.
