Orla KX10 with SD4 - 06/15/12 12:17 PM

AJ, or anybody, how can I generate drum sounds from the Orla KXS10 keyboard thru the sd4? I just got the sd4 new today and don't know if any downloads are necessary . Right, chord , and bass sounds within the rhythyms, but there is a piano sound where the drums should be. Orla does not provide a list of factory midi channel assignments beyond r1, r2, left, bass. I have asked them and are awaiting a response. I believe the piano sound is a default for lack of correct signal, channel reception. Any clues? I want to use this Sunday.

It all depends on wether or not Orla transmits the drum track via midi, if it does its likely to be channel 10.

I have a feeling you should have brought a MidJay+, SD3 or Audya 4 instead if you were hoping to use Ketron styles. The SD4 has internal drum loops, however they are only accessible when using sequencer software.

Orla's styles is what wanted to use, just not their sounds. I can do an end around by muting the right hand, chord, and bass sounds from the Orla and using the sd4 for these. Wanting to physically downsize, the sd4 was the choice for this.

I had an sd3 and used its rhythms . I believe you are righty - no sequencing info is transmitted for drums, but is for bass and chords. I had originally said somewhere that the kx10 is limited in its midi capabilities.I am ok with Orla's auto accompaniment. I'll figure it out. Of course no problem when playing with the band as I only need right hand sounds and chord sounds on the left.

Not only is no sequencing info transmitted for the drums (ch 11 in Orla setup) but no volume commands are transmitted either. The Orla does have a volume pedal jack but the sd4 does not. So using one fc9 pedal in "cv" mode I have to route the sd4 signal through a midi pedal controller and then in to the #2 out, and the KX10 in and out of the #1 jacks using a trs cable from the line out. Or use an insert cable from the sd4 to the in + out of the #1 jacks and use the pedal out of the Orla into the #2 out jack and eliminate the midi pedal controller.

Lots of wires and peripheral equipment. Again, if the KX10 transmitted volume info thru midi I could merge both devices then use the pedal controller with one cable to the pedal.

I think I'll just learn the left hand chording on a standard keyboard- easier said than done for a lifelong accordion player though. But Ketron has made an "8" version of their keyboards (xd8, sd8) for chromatic accordion players with buttons left and right- why not one like the Orla with buttons on the left and keys on the right? I would think there are more accordion players using piano accordions.. but then Ketron tends not to look past Europe. I'm betting they could cut into roland's v-accordion sales with it.
