Help! XV-88 OS Update Failed: Dead Synth! - 12/18/01 11:39 AM

Last night I attempted to update the OS via the SmartMedia v.1.08 downloaded from rolandus.com. I thought I followed Roland's instructions to the letter, but got an "ERROR READING CARD" message, and no update; just flashing bank lights.

At one time I think there were some detailed instructions on Cosmic Dreamer's site; but I can't seem to find it anymore.

Any help or advice you have would be appreciated...

OK, in case anyone's interested, I finally found out why I couldn't update (Thanks Tony): Apparently, the capability to upgrade via SmartMedia was added with v.1.07. Thus, with my "first generation" OS the box did not recognize the file. (Although, for some reason, the internal programming did seem to want to start the process....)

My update using MIDI files went fine. BTW, it would have been nice for Roland to mention this on their software updates webpage. Oh well.

I have an XV88 as well, and haven't upgraded since I got it. If you don't mind me asking (as it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere) what is effected by the upgrade?

Thanks!

Out of sheer curiousity I decided to update to version 1.08 on my XV88. I connected the Midi - downloaded the SMF update program, and powered up (as described holding DEC and A). EVERY time I try the update, at some random point (out of 10 times, it has always occured different places) there is an error (ie: Midi Flaming / other assorted messages) So now my synth is dead until I can get this to work. Yesterday it went up to 96% before it crashed... Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Did you try calling Roland Product Support? After all the horror stories I'd heard, I was pleasantly surprised....
