XP-50 patch/performance mode. NEED HELP!!!
- 03/21/99 09:43 PM
Why does a same sound, sound differently when it is in performance mode? The EFX is on. I choose a sound(s) that i want to use to create a song, but when in performance mode, it is different and sounds crap. How can I rectify this? Please, ANYONE, HELP!!!!

(Correction: this info is for an XP-80, not an XP-50; see next message...sorry!)
I don't know if this will help with what you are experiencing, but here it is:
First, save anything you want to save onto floppy disk. Then, go into UTILITY... FACTORY-8...F6/EXECUTE (turn Write Protect Off, if necessary). Now, knowing the difference between a patch and a performance (which the manual does not do well) is key: a patch is a single (multitonal) sound and a performance is a simply a collection of patches. For sequencing, if you want to sequence multiple tracks, you must be in performance mode and key mode must be set to SINGLE (instead of LAYER); this way, each track or part will contain its own patch. All preset USER performances are set to LAYER and (not SINGLE) cannot be used effectively for sequencing multiple tracks. Move to PERFORMANCE preset group A; see how key mode is in SINGLE? Now, you should be able to sequence without flaw. Just press SEQUENCER and go from there.
By the way, I found the XP-80 video owners manual to be incredibly helpful (versus the paper manual); you just watch someone do everything and duplicate what he does. If you would like to buy my video owners manual for $20 or so, let me know (I have learned all I need to learn about the XP-80). I paid $40 for mine, but I have seen them marked down to $25 in a music store near me.
Hope this helped! If I did not answer your question, let me know.

When I went back to the list of topics, I saw that you own an XP-50, not an XP-80. So, never mind about the video. You might consider getting the one for the XP-50, though. I hope what I said applies to the XP-50 as well.

Hi Daffy,
different patches use sometimes different settings of the EFX device. Since the synth has only one EFX device you can asign only one effect setting to a performance. So it can be necessary for some of the patches in performance mode to make use of their efffects used in patch mode (output setting "EFX" and number of used patch in the effects section). For some other patches used in the same performance you may set output to "MIX" and try to replace the wanted effect by changing other parameters of the patch.
Try it out!
