N1 please help

I just purchased the N1 and the book REALLY sucks. This is what I need it to do. Otherwise, it can't replace my Roland RD-500..

While using a Combination (Bass/Piano), I need to add Accordion (or strings, or whatever) with my volume pedal.
How do I assign the volume pedal to adjust just the volume of one part (accordion, strings, etc).

Also, It seems that when I make changes to a combination and try to exit without saving, it saves the changes anyway!! Am I just stupid?? Don't answer that!

Anyway, any insight would be mucho appreciated!!!

I believe that you must edit the string program to assign the pedal input to modulate the VDA section,and then include this edited program in your combination.
