I wanna try playing this tune but what cheaper synth can I use to recreate the sound that Edgar Winter use in his ARP 2600?

The sound is very basic and very easy to recreate on almost any synth that has a sine wave LFO, 12Db lowpass filters and at least PWM or a hard sync.

If you're after true analog, the closest thing to a 2600 would be an ARP Odyssey. Look on e-bay, they go for about $200 to $400 US.

If you're opwn to digital, then try GMedia Ossity, which is a software version of an Odyssey. It's very good.

On a hardware side, synths like NORD lead, NORD modular, Novation Supernove or NOVA, Korg prophecy, KOrg MS2000 etc.
Basically any virtual analog synth.
Good luck!

Another suggestion for a virtual analog synth would be the Alesis ION. We've seen them for less than $700 new.

Watch out for used vintage synths. A lot of stuff from eBay can be junk. Even if it's from a legitimate seller, older analog synths suffer from tuning problems, among other things.

Well, that's certainly true. Getting an old analog synth in a good condition and maintaining it in working order is a very tricky business.

Go to www.synthesizers.com forum and ask a few guys there about what it takes to own a true analog synth.
