new to synths, need somewhere to start!!!!

hi everyone, my name is kellen.

ok so i came across a microkorg for a really good deal from a friend, basically brandnew.. i have no expirience with synthesizers.. so far all i do is make fun sounds with it but.. i just mess around and dont understand the functions and stuff... all the terminology and capablilites of the microKorg are pretty overwhelming. i just need somewhere to start to learn the basics of a synth and how to play so i can eventually progress into making some sort of music with the help of a laptop.. are there some sort of SELF HELP BOOKS haha or does anyone know of some sort of lessons offered for this stuff somewhere in San Diego CA?

i toook this korg of my friends hands cuz i thought itd be easy to just start bustin out on but.. i was wrong and i dont want this to go to waste! any help is apreciated

Besides the description above you need the manual.

Then I suggest for a start to learn about midi first as you like to use the synth with your laptop which requires some midi -knowledge.

The first thing and a mandatory must is the manual. Being inexperienced as you said, you will probably not be able to use the machine properly and to its capacity without it. Explaining it on the board; well, it would be real lengthy and you would probably get more from a good book. Get to know the basic functions of synths and how they work. It's kind of like the alphabet in that once you know it well, it will quickly begin to show. I am posting to you since you said you are starting out pretty much fresh. This is a great advantage in a way because it is the best way to start when you have no bad or 'wrong' habits to un-break when operating a synth. Note I said 'operating', rather than playing, which is usually better than 70% of a synth's output. The machine can work, and even play for you if it is operated to it's capacity.
