My friend is using his laptop for backing tracks for guitar and it gives him alot of hum and fan noise.

He is using the laptop 1/8 out to the rca tape ins of a Yamaha powered mixer. But even if he goes 1/4" and goes through a channel he still gets alot of noise.

I use a gigaport in out usb sound card but he doesn't want to spend alot of money.

So I was wondering if any of you here want to share your secret of getting a decent signal using the laptop outputs.

Nearly all laptops have lousy power supplies with floating ground systems. All he needs in a ground defeater plug for the power supply's AC plug and the problem will be solved. Ground defeater plugs are available in any hardware store and most sell for under $2.

Ground defeater plugs are the ones that go from 3 prongs to two, am I correct?

Correct. I got a bunch of them after hearing it could be a matter of time before they're banned.

The hotmail address has been going a bit crazy lately--lots of junk mail. The ground defeater plugs are exactly as you describe and they do the job of eliminating the noise.
