For those of you who are interested: One of my forummembers found out that you can feed the OS-Update v1.01 of the Roland EXR-3s/5s/7s into the "old" Roland EXR-3/5/7 and turn the latter into almost true 3s/5s/7s models.

You'll get all the benefits of the "s"-model, EXCEPT for the larger Flashmemory (2 MB in the 3/5/7 and 4 MB in the 3s/5s/7s)

So... 100 Userprograms, piano in arrangermode, portamento, it's all there, including MIDI over USB! (now THAT is worth trying ;-)

For Dutch readers: there is a topic on this "operation" on the Dutch Keyboardforum (www.keyboardforum.nl). For those of you who don't read Dutch:

CAUTION! Roland does not support this! IF for ANY reason your EXR malfunctions after this OS-update, your warranty is VOID. "Off the record" however, Roland has told me "if it works, it works, but we don't encourage this"

ALSO! Make backups of your songs and styles in the Flash-memory. The OS update will require a Flash-initialization, so all the contents will be LOST.

ALSO! For EXR-3 and EXR-5 users: Your diskettes with UserProgram sets (10 at a time) will be USELESS after the update. From then on, your EXR will only save and load sets of 100 UserPrograms. The EXR-7 will read Userprogramsets of 10 even after the upgrade.

THE DOWNSIDE The true EXR-3s/5s/7s hold 4 MB of Flashmemory. Your EXR-3/5/7 does not and will not have it. When connected to a PC, your EXR will appear as having 4 MB of Flash on board, but it actually isn't 4 MB!
So, if you copy files to the Flashmemory, the EXR will not warn you that the memory is full after 2 MB. If you copy beyond that, ALL CONTENTS OF THE FLASHMEMORY WILL BE LOST and you may have to restart your EXR. So be careful not to copy too many data to the Flashmemory after the update.

Keep that in mind :-)

Now, if you still want to go on, here's in short the procedure:

Download the OS-updates for the EXR-3s/5s/7s from the known supportboards, for instance http://www.rolandmusik.de/seiten/downloads/updates/up_af.html#E

Follow the usual instructions for installing new OS-updates in your EXR-3/5/7

Watch your EXR-3/5/7 restart after the update and say "EXR-3s" / "EXR-5s" / "EXR-7s" in the display... Convince yourself you're not dreaming by selecting UserPrograms above 9. Notice that all 100 UserPrograms are pre-programmed already (and of course you can save your own UserPrograms on any of the 100 positions)

Download the USB driver for the EXR-s-series from http://www.rolandus.com/products/details.asp?CatID=8&SubCatID=39&ProdID=EXR-40%2 0OR&PageMode=4

Install it and enjoy MIDI over USB on your "old" EXR-model.

Should you need any more info on this, you can contact me on bart@keyboardforum.nl , or read the topic (DUTCH!) on www.keyboardforum.nl

All credits for this very nice discovery go to Joris, one of the members of the Dutch Keyboardforum

Additional message: Today a "Roll-back" test was performed, to change the 'EXR-5s' back to a EXR-5 by simply re-installing the original OS. This worked flawless. Our conclusion is that the 3s/5s/7s upgrade to the 3/5/7 models does not cause any damage to the instrument.

Still, keep in mind: You're on your own if it causes trouble! :-)

Since the Roland E-100 and E-200 are in fact the EXR-3 and EXR-5 (with a different finish, that's all), it should be possible to load the EXR-3s/5s upgrades into these models as well.

Since we don't have the E-100 and E-200 here in Europe, my question is: Is there anyone out there who dares to try to upgrade his E-100/E-200 to a EXR-3s/EXR-5s? I'd like to know if that works too.
