Anyone have any idea on how to get that really screechy effect, like holding a mic close to an amp on a keyboard? Is there some kind of effects unit or pedal i could put my keyboard out through? I hear it a lot from guitars. Thanks.

Interesting thought... Never tried that one out. Might work on some of the keyboard sounds, like piano or guitar simulations..

I have some time coming weekend and see or one of the guitar pedals will do the trick...

To my knowledge most guitar processors can simulate feedback. There's no mystery to it since the process is quite simple. All they basically do is run a sine wave with slow attack and a touch of vibrato through distortion. In some cases it can be set to trigger automatically but on most Boss and Roland processors I've used I could also trigger feedback with the pedal.

I used to do this with my synths too. Set up a "feedback" patch, layer it with some nice electric guitar sample (or fake it best I could with analog synths) and just run the whole thing through distortion. THe "feedback" patch should be at least a couple of octaves higher than the guitar sound. may be even 3 or 4 octaves just to make it really really hurt your ears. Plenty of vibrato on it too and a slow swelling amp envelope attack settings.

cheers,

3351: Wow, thanks man. Your directions lead me straight to a great feedback patch. After adding a bit of noise and messing with the eq I ended up with pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

Well the pedals don't cut it wright, you're even better off with a good patch...
Still not close to a real guitar, but I might be too critical since I am a guitar player myselve..

Still it is possible to do with software like reason/reaktor..

If you like to find out how much can be achieved with emulated guitars on software, you might cheque out Rick Richards...
He produced an entire cd with reason.
Oh, and he has a unique style, not for the faint of heart though ( I love it)

Hey, man, I don't know what the big deal is. I get that all the time, without even trying.

Cool!

Russ, most likely your guitars are getting too old, so your pick ups (like mine ) start to become microphonic...

Fred, I get the same out of my keyboards. Could have something to do with the wires hanging out of the cases.

Fred, I actually was somewhat familiar with his work. It's pretty common to find a talent like this working in related areas. Same thought process involved in graphics, film and audio.

He's a talent.

Thanks,

Russ
