When Donny has a 61 note arranger, he prefers 61 keys. When Donny has a 76 note arranger, he prefers 76 keys. When Donny has a lightweight arranger, he prefers lightness. When he has a heavier arranger, it isn't so important. When Donny has an arranger with a polished, CD-like sound, that's what he likes. When he has an arranger with a ballsey, live sound, he prefers that...
See a trend here?
What Donny REALLY likes is change... But, once he has got used to the change, perhaps he realizes that any future improvement has got to come from HIM... And so, on to the NEXT arranger!
But bless him for doing it! Without guys like Donny, the arranger industry would be in a FAR worse position than it already is!
Anyone want to start a pool? I say the PA800 lasts three months... Any takers?

donny, i have owned the pa800, i now own the sd1+, there is no way i would go back to the PA, there are too many useful hardware features on the ketron, and sound wise they are comparable, but i reckon the fills/intros will drive you nuts and you will have a lot of tweaking work to do to get it up and running.. the tc harmoniser on the pa is quite fiddly to get right, plus the keys are so, sooo plasticky, there are other things but that'll do i suppose....the only change i would consider now would be to the new PA2x or what i am calling the roland g80...just my opinion donny not a criticism of your plans. hope it goes well, dennis

Contrary to DNJ's re-repeated posts about the importance for him needing 76 keys, I suspect he's realized now that 76 notes may be more than 'he' really needs. Mmmmmm...the thick plottens...I seriously doubt Donny will buy an PSR-S900 after reading your post Scott...he was very critical of the instrument saying it wasn't a big enough upgrade from the PSR-3000 to make it worth his while. Perhaps the PA-800 will be his focus, especially if Dave will allow him to use the styles he's fixed on his. Actually, I think Donny is always searching for that "something" that will boost his performance...you can't blame the guy for that. Ian

If a PSR3000, a G70, a PSR3k again, and an SD1+ (did I miss anything?) can't boost his performance, any bets that anything else will (except for the first few weeks)? The weird thing is, this guy is the FIRST to say it's all about the entertainer, it doesn't matter what you play (or what hat you wear) yada yada yada, but he is CONSTANTLY going through new arrangers in a futile search for I don't know WHAT... Put an Audya in his hands tomorrow, and I guarantee it's for sale within six months. I don't know about you, but when I find 'The greatest arranger ever made', I don't trade it away for something I've barely played (and didn't like much when I did)... I'll hang on to it until something I KNOW is MUCH better comes out. I still say three months (conservatively). And yes, eventually, Donny will get an S900, and say that it is 'The best arranger ever made'. THEN we will have TWO people that agree on that, Ian...

In the past three years I have owned a Psr2000, Psr21000, Psr3000, Tyros 1, Tyros 2 and two KN7000. Sold one and now I am selling the other one. The only keyboard I have now is the Psr3000 and Im searching again.
Do you know how difficult it is to go on a job with a new keyboard you do the job well only because the talent is there. You never get to the depths of the keyboard, you dont have it long enough, but you are able to do a good job because its mostly you.
I admire the people who stay with a keyboard until they know every area of it, I have done that with Technics keyboards but there is more for me, I love to explore and learn
and sooooo V E R Y important, I Love getting A NEW TOY. Aaaaaaaaah!
Just me, John C.

The vast majority of arranger keyboard players never really dig into the inner-workings of their boards. And in fact, most barely scratch the surface of what the keyboard can and cannot do. In reality, today's modern keyboards can do far more than than anyone could possibly imagine. They are extremely versitile, the sounds are incredible, and in the hands of an accomplished performer, today's keyboard provides audiences with superb, musical entertainment. Keep in mind, however, that most arranger keyboard and synth user manuals are just plain awful. They are poorly written, have lousy illustrations, and at times many of the features are either glossed over or completely omitted. Even with these shortcomings, the manual is a must read for everyone that purchases a keyboard or synth. Then, after searching the manual for the answers to complex questions, the next best option is to post those questions on various forums that deal with the specific keyboard. You'll usually get good information from users who have a fair degree of technical expertise, hence the creation of the various forums. For me, the PA800 just didn't have what I wanted to hear, even after spending an hour playing with the inner workings. For now, I'll stick with the PSR-3000s. Good Luck Donny, Gary ------------------ Travlin' Easy

Sound hauntingly familiar folks? Scott [This message has been edited by Scottyee (edited 09-08-2007).]

Donny, you certainly have every right to play whatever you want to. Way to go. I haven't unpacked my G-70 yet, but saw one in Louisville yesterday and spent about 1/2 hour with it.
I was not all that impressed, so I may have a new G-70 for sale. I also have DonM's Midjay, and just realized that I would have to preset all pianos, etc. on the controller every night. I am probably too stubborn to do that, so I may not use that either.I may give it to my kid to use for his DJ operation.
The use of the SH-201 may not happen on the job because of the challenge of making tone changes in real time along with two other keyboards.
I bought a 10 string bass-guitar combination recently, which was terrible in design (couldn't set intonation), so i got pissed and torched it.
The point is, only you can decide what you want to play. I bought lots of stuff lately that I just don't like, and if I want to sell it, will it to someone, give it away, scrap it or torch it, that's my business and my business only.
Here's hoping you find something that you're happy with . Think about a swap of your SD-1plus for a new in the box G-70. I have the foot controller-again new in the box and a Gator case-unopened. Haven't thought that one through, but it's a possibility.
Best of luck!
R.

Wouldn't want to play any gig where the stage was so small, you could only use a 61... They are only about 12" smaller than a 76. You play venues THAT tight? Wouldn't want to play any gig so small, the built-in speakers were good for anything (even monitors)... At home, my G70 sits in the sweet spot between two Mackie HR824 reference monitors. They start making built-ins that sound THAT good, THEN I'll think about one. At the gig, I've got JBL SR series PA speakers, that'll decimate any built-in. I Play a lot of piano, I play a lot of LH bass and piano, I use a lot of SMFs and need to put up at least two sounds with decent range. Can't do that well on a 61. We ALL make compromises... Me, I'll compromise on how much weight I have to carry. For me, it's better than compromising on the instrument itself. No way Jose!

Still a compromise, and a rather large one, if you are the lead singer and want/need to be facing your audience. Then again, you could always have a few of them standing in the wings. Ian
