very curious,

I have them both at my store, and I love playing the PA800, but certain things just are still done better to my taste on the SD

What are your reasons

Donny, one of your first questions to someone selling something is,"Why are you selling it?"

Since you think that it's a legitimate query...why ARE you selling it?

On your last number of posts you said that you preferred 76 keys.

The PA-800 has 61...why the step backwards?

Ian the Curious.

When Donny has a 61 note arranger, he prefers 61 keys. When Donny has a 76 note arranger, he prefers 76 keys. When Donny has a lightweight arranger, he prefers lightness. When he has a heavier arranger, it isn't so important. When Donny has an arranger with a polished, CD-like sound, that's what he likes. When he has an arranger with a ballsey, live sound, he prefers that...

See a trend here?

What Donny REALLY likes is change... But, once he has got used to the change, perhaps he realizes that any future improvement has got to come from HIM... And so, on to the NEXT arranger!

But bless him for doing it! Without guys like Donny, the arranger industry would be in a FAR worse position than it already is!

Anyone want to start a pool? I say the PA800 lasts three months... Any takers?

Sure hasn't found it, yet, despite owning just about every arranger on the planet.. You would think, if he KNEW what he wants and needs, that he wouldn't buy ANYTHING until he found it.. (especially after trying so many out).

What gets me is how gushingly enthusiastic he is about EVERYTHING he owns, until the day he moves on. Sort of arranger ADD, it seems to me.

At least now we know why so few Ketron demos (if any).

Donny is a lot like me.
The main ingredient in our shows comes from deep within our hearts. The keyboard dujour is secondary to the show. We are showmen who use arrangers, laptops and WHATEVER (even chicken hats, aparantly!) to facilitate a show. The end result for guys like us is that the show sells. Period.

Don't hate because we are fickle with plastic and silicone. It's the music that ties us to the crowd, and my bot Donny can keep a dance floor packed as well as anyone I know.

I am STILL lovin' my new PA800...but that's THIS week
(teasing - it's everything I need right now)

If the arranger itself is so secondary to those other skills, why change it so often? You make it sound so unimportant, but we all know that it is the thing that Donny spends the most time posting about, obsessing about and changing, so often.

We all know already he's a busy man...

All that time spent converting SMFs, styles and learning a new OS could easily be spent learning new routines, or combing the hat shops for a new hat for the act!

I admire a Guy who can go from keyboard to keyboard and loving each one. My best guess? -- His true love is in music and performing, all the other things are just tools and things, which he does not marry.

My opinion Ya cant do this with wives without paying dearly but with keyboards its allowed its fun.

At least this time make him pledge that he will read the darn manual and not pester every Korg owner on the Forum to know how the keyboard du jour works, because this patterns tends to repeat itself every time: everybody goes out of his way to help him... until he sells everything, leaving all the "little helpers" with a sense of... how can I say? having wasted their time?
(Just ask the guys at Roland-arranger.com)

donny,
i have owned the pa800, i now own the sd1+, there is no way i would go back to the PA, there are too many useful hardware features on the ketron, and sound wise they are comparable, but i reckon the fills/intros will drive you nuts and you will have a lot of tweaking work to do to get it up and running.. the tc harmoniser on the pa is quite fiddly to get right, plus the keys are so, sooo plasticky, there are other things but that'll do i suppose....the only change i would consider now would be to the new PA2x or what i am calling the roland g80...just my opinion donny not a criticism of your plans.
hope it goes well,
dennis

Until he starts hating it...

Let's face it, if a guy changed wives that often, you would have a hard time saying that he loved each one... just that he got tired of the last one and needed to move on.

That's just called fear of commitment, NOT 'love'...

For those of you who may have missed reading this thread earlier, It's IMPORTANT to note that DNJ has subsequently EDITED (deleted) a portion of his initial thread posting, which also stated he was interested in possibly exchanging his SD1+ for a Yamaha S900 (+cash).

Contrary to DNJ's re-repeated posts about the importance for him needing 76 keys, I suspect he's realized now that 76 notes may be more than 'he' really needs.

My predictable PREDICTION: whether Donny gets the Korg PA800 now or not, he's eventually going back to his comfort zone, his PSR3000 successor: the Yamaha S900. Mark my words folks and after a few weeks, come back and tell me whether I was/wasn't correct.

Mmmmmm...the thick plottens...I seriously doubt Donny will buy an PSR-S900 after reading your post Scott...he was very critical of the instrument saying it wasn't a big enough upgrade from the PSR-3000 to make it worth his while.

Perhaps the PA-800 will be his focus, especially if Dave will allow him to use the styles he's fixed on his.

Actually, I think Donny is always searching for that "something" that will boost his performance...you can't blame the guy for that.

But remember, It's also Donny Pesce that's been preaching that this 'somthing' must come from the musician & his/her musicianship, and not attainable from any keyboard.

That said, I still think that, even if not in this go round, he'll be back (sooner than later) to his old Yamaha PSR3000's successor, The S900. Anyone willing to wager a bet?

Doesn't he already get a bunch of Viagra spam?

If a PSR3000, a G70, a PSR3k again, and an SD1+ (did I miss anything?) can't boost his performance, any bets that anything else will (except for the first few weeks)?

The weird thing is, this guy is the FIRST to say it's all about the entertainer, it doesn't matter what you play (or what hat you wear) yada yada yada, but he is CONSTANTLY going through new arrangers in a futile search for I don't know WHAT... Put an Audya in his hands tomorrow, and I guarantee it's for sale within six months.

I don't know about you, but when I find 'The greatest arranger ever made', I don't trade it away for something I've barely played (and didn't like much when I did)... I'll hang on to it until something I KNOW is MUCH better comes out.

I still say three months (conservatively). And yes, eventually, Donny will get an S900, and say that it is 'The best arranger ever made'. THEN we will have TWO people that agree on that, Ian...

In the past three years I have owned a Psr2000, Psr21000, Psr3000, Tyros 1, Tyros 2 and two KN7000. Sold one and now I am selling the other one. The only keyboard I have now is the Psr3000 and Im searching again.

Do you know how difficult it is to go on a job with a new keyboard you do the job well only because the talent is there. You never get to the depths of the keyboard, you dont have it long enough, but you are able to do a good job because its mostly you.

I admire the people who stay with a keyboard until they know every area of it, I have done that with Technics keyboards but there is more for me, I love to explore and learn

and sooooo V E R Y important,
I Love getting A NEW TOY. Aaaaaaaaah!

Just me, John C.

The vast majority of arranger keyboard players never really dig into the inner-workings of their boards. And in fact, most barely scratch the surface of what the keyboard can and cannot do. In reality, today's modern keyboards can do far more than than anyone could possibly imagine. They are extremely versitile, the sounds are incredible, and in the hands of an accomplished performer, today's keyboard provides audiences with superb, musical entertainment.

Keep in mind, however, that most arranger keyboard and synth user manuals are just plain awful. They are poorly written, have lousy illustrations, and at times many of the features are either glossed over or completely omitted.

Even with these shortcomings, the manual is a must read for everyone that purchases a keyboard or synth. Then, after searching the manual for the answers to complex questions, the next best option is to post those questions on various forums that deal with the specific keyboard. You'll usually get good information from users who have a fair degree of technical expertise, hence the creation of the various forums.

For me, the PA800 just didn't have what I wanted to hear, even after spending an hour playing with the inner workings. For now, I'll stick with the PSR-3000s.

Good Luck Donny,

Gary

OMG! This forum (espcially NOW!) reminds me of the Classic 50's TV shows: the "Honeymooners", starring Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden (a NYC bus driver) & wife Alice, who constantly bicker & fight right up until the end of the show, and then at the very end, kiss & make up, with Gleason delivering his classic: "Baby, you're the Greatest!" line, but then, back at each others throats again in the very NEXT episode. Sound hauntingly familiar folks?

Amen I am just amazed at the capabilities my personal arranger allows. It has taken time (8 months) to really explore everything it offers. A truly remarkable product in every way.

As much as I like all products, I have found one that allows me to grow. In fact, I get anxious about other boards, but cannot justify buying anything else. It works - big time

I guess the converse is true also...

It just takes some people a long time to realize something is NOT what they need...

Me, I try to make that decision in the store, BEFORE I buy it!

Diki,

You are GOOD. No way I could ever know the full capablilites of a product first time played, unless it is just plain terrible - and there a few of those.

I go to a store, I spend a whole afternoon on it. Still not sure? I spend ANOTHER afternoon on it. I don't buy it until I'm positive I can't live without it.

Took me eight YEARS to find anything I liked better than My G1000.... Maybe I'm good, but maybe I just take my time, get it right the first time.

You love your Yamaha, zuki. You going to buy anything else until you are SURE it's better than what you have?

Didn't think so....

Donny, would you be interested in a swap trial? I'll send you my E60 in exchange for your sd1+. We both try it for 2-3 weeks: if we both want to swap I'll give you cash difference. mine cost me $1595, don't know what you paid. If either of us doesn't want to swap after 2-3 weeks, deal is off and we both return..will set us both back the shipping costs but we'll have had the fun of trying out keyboards we've never had an opportunity to really explore..hopefully neither gets damaged in shipment. email me your reply privately.

Donny, you certainly have every right to play whatever you want to. Way to go. I haven't unpacked my G-70 yet, but saw one in Louisville yesterday and spent about 1/2 hour with it.

I was not all that impressed, so I may have a new G-70 for sale. I also have DonM's Midjay, and just realized that I would have to preset all pianos, etc. on the controller every night. I am probably too stubborn to do that, so I may not use that either.I may give it to my kid to use for his DJ operation.

The use of the SH-201 may not happen on the job because of the challenge of making tone changes in real time along with two other keyboards.

I bought a 10 string bass-guitar combination recently, which was terrible in design (couldn't set intonation), so i got pissed and torched it.

The point is, only you can decide what you want to play. I bought lots of stuff lately that I just don't like, and if I want to sell it, will it to someone, give it away, scrap it or torch it, that's my business and my business only.

Here's hoping you find something that you're happy with . Think about a swap of your SD-1plus for a new in the box G-70. I have the foot controller-again new in the box and a Gator case-unopened. Haven't thought that one through, but it's a possibility.

Best of luck!

R.

Hey Russ, if you keep that G70 boxed...my birthday is in June...It would make a great Christmas present too....

A 1/2 hour on a G70..is not enough time...You just may be over looking the best board you will ever own..

Open that box and get to know what the G70 is all about...I know what you have now..and I think the G70 can replace all of your current stuff.......well maybe not your B3..

Just make sure any G70 you listen to has OS3 installed, and the reworked styles and OTSs in it. Otherwise, you are NOT hearing a 'new' G70...

All good and well, but "how much" does the G70 weigh [B]including[B] case, and what are the overall dimensions (L x W x H) of a suitable G70 case? My best calculations say: over 70 lbs.... no?

about 45 pounds for the G70 and my GigSkinz case weighs in around 13 pounds [with wheels]..That's around 58 pounds and no compromises..

Russ give the G70 sometime.

It is one monster of a board as is the Tyros2. Some nights when I play the G70, I think gotta sell that Tyros2. But then I sit at the Tyros2 listen to it and consider all the 3rd party support..........and think sell the G70. I'm like the weather with the 2 boards.... which way is the wind blowing today I don't need 2 arrangers, but they're both so good to my ears in their own way.

When I had my G70 I loved the makeup tools
man you could get into and parameters of each instrument or each individual drum and FINE TUNE & MIX & MATCH till your hearts content creating just the right sound you need within a style or SMF unlike any other.
Dig deep you'll be rewarded for sure.

Wouldn't want to play any gig where the stage was so small, you could only use a 61... They are only about 12" smaller than a 76. You play venues THAT tight?

Wouldn't want to play any gig so small, the built-in speakers were good for anything (even monitors)... At home, my G70 sits in the sweet spot between two Mackie HR824 reference monitors. They start making built-ins that sound THAT good, THEN I'll think about one. At the gig, I've got JBL SR series PA speakers, that'll decimate any built-in.

I Play a lot of piano, I play a lot of LH bass and piano, I use a lot of SMFs and need to put up at least two sounds with decent range. Can't do that well on a 61.

We ALL make compromises... Me, I'll compromise on how much weight I have to carry. For me, it's better than compromising on the instrument itself.

No way Jose!

***Yup - Sometimes, I get paid very well to set up in teeeeny tiny places ! And extra FOOT is a luxury !

*** Pity - you're missing a very lucrative part of the music business... The venues that pay for ambiance and entertainment with little bits of volume. I guess you have enough money!

*** Come to Philly, I'll be happy to show you how ! For 15 years, I played nothing BUT LH bass and piano arrangements.

We ALL make compromises... Me, I'll compromise on how much weight I have to carry.
*** You GO, boy! Like The beatles said " Carry that weight a long time" ... I'd rather enjoy the trip as my back gets older !

Yeah I play on very small stages with 5 other people. 76 keys just wouldn't work at most venues we play. That 12" is all the space I have to get out from around the keyboard next to the drum kit .... plus 76 keys wouldn't fit into my car with all the other gear I have to cart around. 12" can be critical ... sometimes size DOES matter.

You need 12 extra inches? Why not ask the drummer to bring along fewer tom-toms, or a few less cymbals, or use an Octo-Pad and a module, if space is THAT tight...?

Then you will quickly find out how most musicians view making compromises to their rigs for the sake of space... Why is it always up to the keyboard player to accommodate everyone else?

Me, if I'm on a tight stage and there is a width problem, I'll set up sideways... Ta-daaaa!

Still a compromise, and a rather large one, if you are the lead singer and want/need to be facing your audience.

Then again, you could always have a few of them standing in the wings.

Pianist have often taken the 'slightly sideways' approach, as the piano often obscures them too much. If it was good enough for Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee, it's OK with me!

(Mind you, I STILL don't stand on my G70, strong though it is... )

Russ, NO - the controller remembers the settings. Be sure the controller is set to Bank 1. I think! Maybe it's Bank 2. It's been too long for me to remember, but the controller is programmed on one of those two Banks to call up a large variety of sounds.
Call me and we'll figure it out.

I noticed those tips Donny, that's too funny.

You are such an influential talent, the simple topic of changing keyboards created this swarm of comments. You should feel humbled by all this attention!

I for one admire Donnie for his ability to take any keyboard and make it his own, play gigs, teach others, and when it begins to sound repititious go get a clean one and start over.
He also keeps the rest of the so called musicians in this forum intelectually aware and on their toes, and that keeps it all interesting.
Besides that I enjoy purchasint his castoffs as he is an astute business man and I can sleep at night knowing the deal will go right because he will make it go right.
I nominate Donnie for Mayor of the General Arranger Forum and not just because his first name is the same as my middle name but because if he wasn't here I wouldn't even bother reading this forum any longer.
Best to all
