Hi

I am using the Psr 3000 with a live drummer and Standard Midi Files without drum tracks. I am trying to figure out a way to send a click track to the drummer audible only to him. I have programmed the click on ch 16 and sending it to a synth from the PSR 3000 and it works great. Only thing is it is playing as a piano sound in the PSR 3000 mix. Naturally, when I turn it down in the PSR 3000 mixing console it is also turned down on the synth as well. The only thing I can do is pull the midi cable to the synth. Turn down the volume and plug it back in. Not too practical. I cannot tell the synth to ignore the volume change either. Any ideas?

Instead of a synth module - send the signal to a drum machine and let the Yamaha midi signal be the master. That way he can adjust volume and tone on the drum unit itself. I'm sure you can get a cheap drum machine for $50 or less. Heck, a brand new Zoom is only $100.
Write a pattern with just the chick sound.
Is it out of the question to send the whole signal to the drummer ...maybe from the HP outputs or the aux outs?

Thanks Uncle Dave

That was going to be my next step if there really is no other way to do this with a synth driven by the 3000.

Re sending the whole signal. I tried this and the drummer had some difficulty staying with it especially when the instrument parts were not rhythmically strong.

I work with a drummer and deliberately include a rhythm track, with usually the high hat and snare panned hard right so that he gets that out of his monitor (we just send the stereo PA feed to our monitors; I get left and he gets right).

When we first started using midi files / style in support of our sound we would "lose sync" very often. These days it is a very rare occurrence. We think this is due to 2 main things: familiarity with the songs and mainly being able to play the tunes to an exact tempo.

I'll say this gently, and probably take some heat anyway, but

"ALL DRUMMERS SHOULD OWN DRUM MACHINES"

I never met one that could play in strict time all night, and it is a valuable tool for learning to "follow". ( Another skill that eludes the drummer types )

When working with tracks of any kind, the TRACK IS THE BOSS, and everyone needs to be able to FOLLOW THAT TRACK. Period. If your drummer can't do that - get a better drummer.

Thanks MacAllcock

I considered panning everything but the drums to one side and feeding the other instruments to the house, however, the Psr 3000 is known to sound kinda thin when not in full stereo so I was hoping to avoid that if I could

Uncle Dave

Re Drummers. Agreed.

I am imagining a possible solution but not sure if its possible. Can I create a user sound that has no amplitude and select that sound with a program change in the sequence?

I guess I am just finding it hard to believe that it is impossible to independantly combine off board synths with the PSR 3000 when usung the PSR 3000's sequencer

Why not just run all the SMF song backing tracks off a laptop and both of you just play along?

Trying to get the canned drums out of the mix. It is the one thing that makes it sound most like karaoke.

Should have explained better.. the Snare and HighHat are panned hard right as a result of embedded NRPN values in midi files; all other drum voices and all other tracks remain in glorious stereo!
