I bought a PSR 640 yesterday and came in touch with this site today. Nobody seems to be saying much about the 640. Is it such a bad machine? The only reference to it says the 730 is better than the 640. Is this true? I know the 740 is better but do you think I have wasted money buying the 640 ?
Thanks for your help.

Hi,

when you discover let me know the answer, cause I'm trying to decide what keyboard I'll buy and probably will be 740,640 or 730.

I've already tryed to make questions in many forum discussion, but I don't get anything.

Aaahhh... the PSR-640 and PSR-740.

What I would say to "lokehinde" is congratulations on your purchase of the 640. No, it is not a bad machine. Have you wasted money buying the 640 because you know the 740 is better? Probably not. That's because the 640/740 are essentially the same, with the only major difference being vocal harmony, organ flutes, a few more voices, and 64-note polyphony.

So, if you don't do any vocals, you won't need vocal harmony, organ flutes - nice but not really necessary unless you're a fan of the real church organs, and 64-note poly is only fulfilled when you're recording complex sequences/arrangements using a computer's sequencer.

Marcelo -- still trying to decide on the 640/730/740? I tried to help you with that, but it appears you're stuck with the 32/64-note poly thing... see above. Again, the two digital displays and enhancements is enough to convince anyone that the 640/740 is far superior to that 630/730 series.

Hope this helps!

Dear Bryan,
Thanks for your response. It came as a surge of fresh wind in summer. It is refreshing to know that I have not wasted money buying the 640.
Thanks once again.

Re: PSR640 . . .

DON'T DO IT!

spring for the PSR1000 or buy a PSR550 . . .

why?

I have a BRAND NEW PSR640 here on my stand. It is going back to the shop tomorrow. just try saving voices and registrations with this keyboard! Impossible unless you store the custom settings on FLOPPY! There is NO battery backup for voices. Yamaha WAS going to put batteries in (there is a D-cell sized hole in the bottom, but for COST reasons apparently, they did not!
All custom settings are LOST after about 1 week (less in my experience) when the powersupply is unplugged . . . )

Buy a PSR550 if you're short on cash . . . it has 8 meg of ROM voices . . . AND still has the batteries, I think . . . I just don't much like the way it looks, or I would have bought it instead of the '640 . . .

The PSR640 SOUNDS FANTASTIK, LOOKS FANTASTIK, but is a royal pain in the butt to use due to the lack of battery backup or flash ROM, and the REALLY SLOW floppy drive.

The PSR1000 has 'flash ROM' which stores all settings without the use of the floppy drive (although, I would backup all custom settings just in case of a ROM wipeout!)

Good luck . . .

by the way, I am upgrading from a 6 year old PSR410, which has performed FLAWLESSLY (except for contact strip replacement) . . .

I just wish the PSR1000 looked as GOOD as the PSR640!
